HBO Picks Up WESTWORLD Pilot from J.J. Abrams & Jonathan Nolan

By: Aug. 30, 2013

According to Deadline, HBO has given a pilot order to the small screen adaptation of the 1973 cult classic WESTWORLD.

The project comes from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV, with PERSON OF INTEREST's Jonathan Nolan set to direct and co-write the pilot with Lisa Joy. Jerry Weintraub, who has been gunning for the series for years, will produce.

HBO's take on the WESTWORLD is officially described as "a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin."

As the report notes, WESTWORLD was previously adapted into the 1980 drama series BEYOND WESTWORLD, which also incorporated elements from the film's sequel FUTUREWORLD.

The original film starred James Brolin and Richard Benjamin, and was set in an adult-themed amusement park terrorized by a robot gone awry, played by Yul Brynner.
