Deadline reports that Candice Bergen will return to television following an almost 20 year absence, to star as the title character in the ABC comedy pilot PEARL.

Andrew Reich will write and executive produce the project to be helmed by Jim Field Smith. According to the site, the single-camera comedy pilot will follow "Pearl (Bergen), a larger-than-life family matriarch who, after she finds out she has cancer, becomes intent on controlling and orchestrating every aspect of her family's life before she dies."

Bergen won five Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Murphy Brown on the long-running CBS comedy series. Since that time, she appeared on ABC's legal drama Boston Legal for which she received two Emmy nominations.
