CBS News Names Major Garrett Chief Washington Correspondent

Major Garrett has been named CBS News' chief Washington correspondent, it was announced today by Christopher Isham, Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief for CBS News.

Garrett has been the Network's chief White House correspondent since 2012 and host of a weekly multi-platform podcast "The Takeout" since it first launched last year. In his new role, Garrett will continue coverage of the White House and the administration, while expanding his reporting to include the biggest stories coming out of the nation's capital, the 2020 campaign and enterprise reporting outside of D.C.

Garrett will continue to appear on all CBS broadcasts and platforms, including CBS THIS MORNING, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH JEFF GLOR and CBSN, CBS News' 24/7 streaming news service.

Since November 2012, Garrett has served as the Network's chief White House correspondent, and in that role has provided extensive coverage for both the Obama and Trump administrations, which has included breaking news on both administrations, the Trump transition as well as ongoing coverage of the Trump White House policy, personnel and legal issues.

Within the past six months, Garrett has traveled to the Helsinki Summit for the meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin and to Buenos Aires, Argentina to cover the G-20 summit. He was also part of CBS News coverage of President Trump's historic summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un.

Garrett is also the creator and host of a weekly multi-platform podcast called "The Takeout," which focuses on politics, policy and pop culture. "The Takeout" airs on all podcast formats, CBSN and on more than 40 radio stations across the country in markets such as New York, Seattle, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Las Vegas. Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb granted his first extensive, on-the-record interview to "The Takeout" in January 2018, garnering national headlines. Republicans and Democrats from the House and Senate as well as several Trump cabinet officials have also appeared.

"Whether it's reporting on presidential elections, ongoing key stories coming from the White House, or high-stakes diplomatic meetings abroad between world leaders, Major has demonstrated unparalleled precision in his reporting and skill in his writing," said Isham. "His decades of experience have made him an invaluable member of our team - he asks questions that go BEYOND the surface, which result in substantive information that is useful to our viewers. I look forward to his continued work with all of us at CBS News and the Washington Bureau in his new role."

"I have been honored to travel the country and the world covering the White House for CBS News, and I am eager to see where that privilege and responsibility takes me next," said Garrett. "The White House and Washington will remain a focus, and change is coming to both. Each national campaign also creates pathways to stories BEYOND the day-to-day horse race. I look forward each and every day to working with the exceptional team of journalists at CBS News."

Prior to joining CBS News, Garrett was a regular contributor for the network, which was established through a partnership with the National Journal where he served as its congressional and White House correspondent. During that time, he co-moderated the network's 2011 South Carolina Republican Primary debate and provided analysis for every 2012 general election presidential debate.

Garrett also served eight years at Fox News where he held several roles, culminating as senior White House correspondent. During his tenure, Garrett covered two presidential elections, Congress, the war in Iraq and other major stories. Before joining FOX News, Garrett was a White House correspondent for CNN during the administrations of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Previously, he was a senior editor and congressional correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, where he reported on Congress and the impeachment of President Clinton. He was a congressional reporter for The Washington Times (1990-1995) and the newspaper's deputy national editor (1995-1997). Earlier in his career, Garrett was a reporter for The Houston Post, Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Amarillo Globe-News.
