Backyard Travel Release New Japan Tour: Beauty and Balance: Exploring Tokyo

The four-day, three-night Kyoto tour begins with a guided exploration of some of the city's most striking temples and historical buildings, starting with Nijo Castle, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period.

The expert Backyard Travel guide then takes travelers to inspect Kinkakuji, also known as 'Golden Pavilion Temple' and its elegant Muromachi period gardens. The exploration continues with a visit to the Daitoku-ji Zen temple complex which began as a small monastery and now contains one of the best Zen rock gardens in the country.

Travelers are also treated to a cultural journey into the nation's iconic cuisine with a shopping tour around Nishiki Market, known locally as 'Kyoto's Kitchen'. Travelers will learn how to pick out the best fresh produce and then move to a traditional wooden townhouse for an exclusive cooking class where they will discover how to prepare sushi, miso soup and a seasonal dessert before feasting upon the fruits of their labor.

The cultural tour also whisks travelers away to the Nara region, a former capital of Japan during the 8th century and an area now renowned for its well-preserved temples and shrines. Travelers will be taken to explore places such as the Todaiji Temple, one of the most famous shrines in Japan today.

While in Nara, travelers can also visit Kasuga-taisha Shinto shrine which is set in the beautiful Nara Park, nicknamed 'Deer Park' by locals for the sheer amount of the animal that roam the grounds.

Once back in Kyoto, travelers will round-off their cultural journey with a visit to Kiyomizu Temple, a unique structure built without the use of nails, followed by a serene stroll through the atmospheric Higashiyama District to shop for Kiyomizu-yaki pottery and local specialties such as home-grown pickles and sweets.

"Kyoto is a city that many consider the truest reflection of Japan and is considered the cultural heartbeat of the fascinating Asian nation," said Backyard Travel's General Manager Maeve Nolan. "This crisp journey takes travelers right into the soul of the country to investigate Japan's rich and illustrious history and see some spectacular architecture that's remained unchanged for centuries."
