STAGE TUBE: Behind the Scenes of American Lyric Theater's New Opera LA REINA

American Lyric Theater's popular series of public libretto readings, The Living Libretto, continues this season at the new National Opera Center. These events are the culminating readings of extensive libretto workshops conducted for the new operas currently being written by ALT Resident Artists, featuring guest actors from Broadway and off-Broadway. Each reading includes a brunch with the featured artists, and is followed by a discussion with the artists moderated by American Lyric Theater's Producing Artistic Director, Lawrence Edelson.

Next up on Sunday, November 11th is LA REINA, with Libretto by Laura Sosa Pedroza; Music by Jorge Sosa and Commissioned by American Lyric Theater. The reading will be directed by Debbie Saivetz and feature Zabryna Guevara, Ed Trucco, Teresa Yenque, Audrey Esparza, Jose Joaquin Perez, Alfredo Huereca, Gerardo Rodrigez, Gerardo Gudino, Antonio Vega, Gabriel Gutierrez, and Israel Hernandez.

Brunch will begin before the reading at 12:30 PM. The reading begins at 1:00 PM. Tickets are $20, including brunch. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Click HERE for more information, and to purchase tickets. No tickets will be sold on the day of the event.

La Reina draws its narrative from the drug trade in Mexico and the United States. The story of revenge and corruption on both sides of the border is inspired by some of the most vivid real life players in this increasingly violent war from the past and present, including Sandra Ávila Beltrán, El Guero Palma, El Pozolero, DEA agent Enrique Camarena, Mexican President Felipe Calderón, and US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North. The opera is being written for classically trained singers and a chamber orchestra of acoustic and electronic forces. The libretto for La Reina is being written in both Spanish and English, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between Mexico and the United States, and the shared responsibility of the current drug conflicts.
