Houston Grand Opera Studio artist, Nathaniel Peake won the Zarzuela prize and Studio alumnus Ryan McKinny won the Birgit Nilsson prize at Placido Domingo's Operalia competition on Sunday, May 2. The weeklong worldwide competition took place this year at famed Milanese opera house Teatro alla Scala- this was the first time the contest has been hosted in Italy.

'Elijah' by Mendelssohn is a dramatic story of the prophet Elijah as he summons the people to righteousness, performs miracles, and struggles against idol-worshipping. He confronts the wicked queen Jezebel. It ends as Elijah rises to heaven in a fiery chariot.

Kate Aldrich will sing the title role of Carmen on April 28 and May 1, replacing Angela Gheorghiu who has withdrawn from those performances. Gheorghiu issued the following statement: 'To make so important a debut as Carmen, I want to be as prepared dramatically as I am musically. Therefore, I will postpone my role debut until a later date when I can work intensely with the Richard Eyre production.'

On May 12 at 7 pm, at the Schomburg Center (515 Malcolm X Blvd, at 135th St.), New York City Opera will present an abridged concert version of X, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOLM X, an opera about the great civil rights leader that premiered at City Opera in 1986. Marking 45 years since the assassination of Malcolm X, Composer Anthony Davis, librettist Thulani Davis, and scenarist Christopher Davis will offer insights on their inspiration and creative process.

Nashville Opera and Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory present an evening of operatic music and star-gazing on May 15. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic basket filled with their favorite foods and beverages which can be enjoyed during a special outdoor concert on the grounds of the observatory. At the conclusion of the opera program guests will have an opportunity to view stars in the evening sky through the Seyfert Telescope (weather permitting). The event offers three different price levels: $20 for a reserved seat, $25 for a table seat (perfect for picnic dinners), and $100 for the Patron Level which also includes additional vocal offerings and star-gazing from the roof of the observatory after the concert. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event from Nashville Opera at (615) 832-5242 or online at www.nashvilleopera.org. The price of admission also includes parking in the adjacent area next to the observatory. Doors open at 6pm and the concert will be performed from 7pm to 8pm in the Dyer Observatory's patio tent.
