Artists to Kick Off Performances in Washington, DC for Weekend of Protest

On Saturday, January 21, in protest of the presidential inauguration and incoming administration, luminaries of the music and art world will gather at The Anti-Ball, a Women's March after-party at the Black Cat in Washington, DC with all proceeds being donated to Planned Parenthood. The Anti-Ball will feature the well-known afrobeat group Antibalas, acting as the house band, with guest artists including Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), Kimya Dawson (The Moldy Peaches), Nels Cline (Wilco), Trixie Whitley, Holly Miranda, Xenia Rubinos, Elena Canlas and Domenica Fossati (Underground Systems), Jeffrey Lewis, Kat Wright, Superhuman Happiness, Miles Francis and TEEN and many more surprise guests to come.

On his upcoming appearance at The Anti-Ball, Stuart Bogie of Superhuman Happiness said, "Beyond being a benefit for an American institution under threat by the incoming administration and by Congress, the artists performing are making a statement with their presence. Neither our shared culture, nor our passivity can be bought. We, just like the demonstrators, must put our lives on hold to go stand up and be heard in this fragile time for our democracy." Martin Perna of Antibalas said, "As musicians, we can contribute by gathering people, motivating them, collaborating and reinforcing our shared values of social and economic justice, gender equality and reproductive rights."

In addition to The Anti-Ball, at least nine benefits for progressive national and local non-profits are being held January 20-22nd, as part of a Weekend of Protest. The events will benefit organizations including Planned Parenthood, National Center for Transgender Equality, Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, Southern Poverty Law Center, Bread for the City, and Casa Ruby. DC. Singer-songwriter, Holly Miranda, said, "I think the next four years will be one long protest, it has to be. So, I see this as the beginning of a movement and not just a march. It's not just for women, it's for everyone everywhere. This is bigger than one sex or one country. I am happy to lend my voice and body to the fight. If artists aren't reflecting the times we live in, then we aren't doing our job."
