SSINGSSING

Six musicians from diverse genres join creative forces in the eccentric band SsingSsing. The group welds two totally disparate elements: rock band music and the typical authentic, somewhat oscillating vocals from Korean folk songs, while also including elements from ballads, pop music and shamanist rituals. Featuring Hee-moon Lee (lead vocal), Young-gyu Jang (Music Director/bass guitar), Da-hye Choo (vocal), Seung-tae Shin (vocal), Chul-hee Lee (drum), and Tae-won Lee (electric guitar/keyboard), SsingSsing creates a unique vibe while introducing elements of Korean traditional music, such as Gyeonggi Sori (folk songs from central province around Seoul), Seodo Sori (folk songs from northwestern provinces in North Korea), and Seoul Gut (shamanistic ritual from Seoul) in their works.

Toni Menage had her first hit at age 14 under the name Little Toni Marsh on Prism Records; the song "Video Burnout" is now recognized as an international dance classic. Menage has the distinction of being one of a handful artists, like Syreeta Wright and India Arie, to pique the interest of Stevie Wonder; with the greatest songwriter of the 20th century as her mentor, she recorded on Tamla Records and performed as an artist on Stevie's elite roster of talent. Toni is also an original member of the multi-platinum band Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam (Columbia Records), with smash hits including "I Wonder if I Take You Home" and "All Cried Out." Menage is also the visionary of her own company Menage Works Inc., which houses both her bands, SoDisrespectful and Project Orange Music. She has created a template for freshness in the event band industry. In addition, Menage manages the amazing Hip Hop artist Poison Ivy, who will be debuting four songs from her mixtape during this Joe's Pub performance, along with Toni Ménage performing her true story album.

FÉMINA

Fémina is a trio of female Patagonian singer songwriters, whose diverse songs are characterized by show-stopping harmonies and a magical on-stage chemistry reminiscent of Ibeyi mixed with smooth hip hop flow a la Anita Tijoux. Hailing from the tiny mountain town of San Martin de los Andes, Fémina are two sisters and their best childhood friend: Sofia "Toti" Trucco (vocals, guitar, ronroco), Clara "Wewi" Trucco (vocals, percussion) and Clara Miglioli (vocals, guitar). Their live shows are often theatrical in nature, and mix a variety of Latin genres such as cumbia, candombe, rumba, boleros, with international rhythms alike such as reggae and funk. A unique and thrilling combo, the trio has toured internationally in Mexico, Europe, released two albums and are currently working away at their third full length album.

Music fans in the US will soon have a chance to hear an exciting new voice emerging from Brazil's diverse music scene, singer/songwriter Aline Muniz, presented in association with Brasil Summerfest. With three acclaimed albums already released in Brazil, Muniz is highly regarded for her sophisticated compositions and sultry vocal style, and her US debut Aline Muniz / Brazilian Pop Music will introduce fans stateside to her fresh global pop sound. Showcasing a broad range of influences from bossa nova, classic MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) to electronica and pop, Aline collaborated on the song selection with acclaimed Brazilian producer Béco Dranoff for the 17-track collection, which features popular original songs from her three previous albums such as "Mensagem de Amor" and the recently released track "Eu, Voce e Mais Ninguém" (You, Me and No One Else) featuring a stunning video filmed in NYC's Meatpacking District, alongside Muniz's exquisite reinterpretations of songs including "Ribbon in the Sky" (Stevie Wonder), "Tempos Modernos" (Lulu Santos), and "Jack Soul Brasileiro" (Lenine).

The duo of singer Livia Nestrovski & Fred Ferreira is one of the brightest stars from the new generation of Brazilian jazz. Their sound and ensemble is characterized by intimate, yet forcefully expressive harmony and the modernization of a delicate repertoire. Song and guitar entwine dialogues and wonder on the paths of Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim, Kurt Weill and many Latin-American composers. Leader of the highly praised Brazilian band O Terno, the singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumantist Tim Bernardes released his debut solo album in 2017. Claimed by Brazilian icons such as Arnaldo Baptista (Os Mutantes), O Terno have played to large audiences including Primavera Sound (in Spain) and Lollapalooza BR. Tim wrote songs and recorded with brazilian tropicalist legend Tom Zé and worked with artists as Adriano Cintra (CSS), Gorky (Bonde do Rolê) and David Byrne. In his solo album he is responsible for playing, producing and writing the orchestral arrangements. His work has been reviewed by Brazilian newspaper giant O Globodescribing "Tim, at 25, already seems to proves himself as the greatest songwriter of his generation."

CHRISTEENE is a human pissoir of raw unabashed sexuality; a gender-blending, booty-pounding, perversion of punk fully equipped with an arsenal of ferocious music intertwined with raw moments of strained intimacy and fiery stank. CHRISTEENE has toured extensively both nationally and internationally for the past several years as well as supporting Faith No More and Peaches on both of their world tours. CHRISTEENE is also accompanied by a highly stylized collection of music videos released through the performer's longtime collaborative efforts with award winning filmmaker and cinematographer, PJ Raval. The duo's music videos have been showcased in the film festivals: SXSW, NYC Rooftop Films, Paris Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, CFMDC's Queer City Cinema's Tour "Wide Open Wide," and more.

Routinely drawing comparisons with such legendary exponents of his instrument as Andrés Segovia, Pablo Sáinz Villegas has already appeared on some of the world's most prestigious stages as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Philharmonie in Berlin, and most recently at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Known for a sound so rich and full that it does not need amplification, his concerto performances regularly inspire new invitations and immediate reengagements as a featured soloist with orchestras in more than 30 countries, including Pittsburgh, Bergen and Israel Philharmonic, as well as Cincinnati, Spanish National and Denmark Symphonies. He made a series of important debuts under the baton of Frühbeck de Burgos, and has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with conductors including Juanjo Mena, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Carlos Kalmar, Michael Francis, Gustavo Gimeno and Cristian Macelaru. Pablo will be accompanied by bassist Pedro Giraudo and percussionist Nacho Arimany.

ARI SHAPIRO: HOMEWARD

As a journalist, NPR's All Things Considered host Ari Shapiro has witnessed wars and revolutions. Now, inspired by his experiences around the world, he takes the stage in Homeward, his first solo cabaret performance. Shapiro sings songs of upheaval, patriotism and hope, from places that are less far away than they seem. When he is not hosting America's most listened-to radio news program, Ari is a frequent guest performer with the "little orchestra" Pink Martini. He has recorded songs on four of the band's albums, in several languages, and performed with them around the world, at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl.

Joe Mande is one of the most exciting young comedians working today. He is currently writing for The Good Place on NBC. Other writing credits include Parks & Recreation, Master of None, and The Kroll Show. He recurs as "Ben" on Modern Family and has also guest starred on Love and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His stand up has been seen on Conan and Late Night with Seth Meyers, and he had a half hour special on Comedy Central. His 2014 album, Bitchface, was number one on the iTunes comedy charts. Mande has also been named one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch."

BETA RADIO

Rooted in vocal harmonies, acoustic and electric guitar, piano, banjo and an eclectic range of additional instrumentation and soulful arrangements, Beta Radio's Americana-folk sound is the result of a decade-long collaboration between Ben Mabry and Brent Holloman. Mabry and Holloman met at summer camp in the North Carolina mountains while on break from high school and immediately formed a musical kinship, bonding over the sounds of another musical duo, Simon and Garfunkel. Throughout high school and college, they found themselves in multiple hard rock and metal bands, an ironic juxtaposition considering the 60's folk sound that first brought them together. When weekly rehearsals and occasional live gigs with various other groups were done, the two would return to their homes to write folk songs together, using traditional arrangements as the framework for their new exercises in lyric and musical composition. Beta Radio's latest release, Colony of Bees, is a layered and ethereal offering that treads into new territory while at the same time managing to effortlessly keep one foot firmly rooted in the Americana-folk arena that they have called home for many years.

ROOTSTOCK REPUBLIC: JUKEBOX

Rootstock Republic, a string Production Company that has collaborated with artists such as Aretha Franklin, Toshi Reagon, John Legend and Janelle Monaé, takes center stage in this concept-based, Jukebox-inspired live string performance. Pairing some of NYC's most versatile string players with one of the industry's most inventive turntablists, this one-night-only performance will sample the songbooks of some of the world's most well-known artists, including Donnie Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Nina Simone and Stevie Wonder. Conceived and orchestrated by Rootstock Republic founder and CEO, Juliette Jones, the performance will also feature specially curated audio-reactive visuals, creating a multimedia exploration of classic songs that will challenge how you see and hear strings in music.

Too weird for pretty much anything else, the feral writer/performer and brains behind a slew of absurdly funny online videos (like his portrayal of a mom in an orange juice commercial), Cole Escola (Difficult People, Man Seeking Woman, Mozart in the Jungle), brings his unique voice to the stage, playing multiple characters in a series of comedic vignettes that operate on the fringes of coherence and social acceptability. The show is directed by Christian Coulson.

Cristin Milioti returns to Joe's Pub after numerous sold out concerts, including the prestigious Lincoln Center's American Songbook. Milioti is known for her dramatic, comedic, and musical work on stage, television and in film. She starred as "Girl" in the Broadway smash hit musical Once, for which she won a Grammy Award and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, and was recently seen in David Bowie's Lazarus. Her film and television credits include Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, FX's Golden Globe-winning drama Fargo, and playing "The Mother" on CBS's hit comedy How I Met Your Mother, and more.

Writer/performer Isaac Oliver's debut collection of essays, Intimacy Idiot, was named one of NPR's Best Books of 2015. After last year's sold-out residency, Oliver returns to Joe's Pub to debut brand-new stories as well as share old favorites in a performance featuring Daniel Loeser and directed by Jason Eagan "A rare talent who manages to deftly combine raunchiness, intelligence, hilarity, and heart," says The New Yorker.

RHYTHM FUTURE QUARTET

The acoustic jazz ensemble, Rhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today's musical universe. The virtuosic foursome, named for a Django Reinhardt tune, offers up a newly minted sound, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France, yet wholly contemporary. Led by violinist Jason Anick and guitarist Olli Soikkeli, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O'Rourke on second guitar and Greg Loughman on bass, Rhythm Future is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre.

Danny Lipsitz and The Brass Tacks tackle the fascinating history of the saxophone's influence on rock 'n' roll music. Through music and stories, The Brass Tacks - with their characteristic high energy and in-your-face performance style - will cover the most influential rock saxophone solos of this era including music by Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, and Fats Domino.

MARIACHI HERENCIA DE MÉXICO

Mariachi Herencia de México, an ensemble of students from Chicago's immigrant barrios, has scored a surprise hit with their debut album of traditional Mexican music. Nuestra Herencia (Our Heritage) ranked No. 2 in its first week on iTunes' Latin chart, defying a music industry trend and pointing to a revival in recorded mariachi music. The album is believed to be the first major mariachi recording released in the U.S. by a student ensemble, with members ranging in age from 11 to 18. It was produced and arranged by L.A.'s mariachi master, Jose Hernández, who calls the project "one of those labor of love things."

In his first ever full evening at Joe's Pub, Miguel Gutierrez, choreographer, performer, composer and singer, unveils a melodious stream of sad Madonna songs called Sadonna. Having sung at Joe's Pub and elsewhere with such luminaries as Justin VivIan Bond, Anohni, Nick Hallett, and Holcombe Waller, as well as in shows by John Kelly and in the legendary Our Hit Parade, Gutierrez takes on his own night to show just how tiny the spiritual distance is between an international pop superstar who grew up in Bay City, Michigan and an international experimental itinerant who grew up in Colonia, New Jersey. Backed by the Sad (Mostly) Latino Boys Backup Singers, aka Slutinos, and with a bunch of amazing guest artists including Nick Hallett and Tessa Skara, Gutierrez invites you to share in a night of melancholia, because, as he loves to say, "I have a lot of feelings, all of them sad ..." Appropriately enough, these evenings happen while the sun still crosses Leo, essentially honoring Miss Madge, the queen of all attention-loving Leos. Come for the Holiday, stay for the tears.
