Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra Performs Fall 'Animal Kingdom' Concert, 11/17 by BWW News Desk
- October 31, 2012 The breathtaking talent of some of Southern California's most proficient young musicians lures audiences with two concerts of classical favorites to kick off Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles' (PSYE) 2012-13 concert series this November. Led by Music Director Maxim Eshkenazy, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO), named Classics Alive Youth Orchestra of the Year in 2012, captivates listeners with rich European harmonic history, including the Spanish dances of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol," the medieval beauty of Wagner's "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" and the Norwegian folk tunes of Grieg's "Peer Gynt," as well as an original composition by the Symphony's French horn player, James Taylor. "PSYO Fall Concert" takes place Sunday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m., at Meng Hall at California State University, Fullerton.

- October 31, 2012 This morning, the Houston Symphony announced a change in this week's program and soloist. Due to the massive travel disruptions caused by Hurricane Sandy, violin soloist Augustin Hadelich is unable to travel to Houston. The Symphony has announced that Concertmaster Frank Huang has agreed to step in at the last minute. Instead of the Bartok Violin Concerto No. 2, he will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

- October 27, 2012 Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov has been named the Prize Laureate of the 2012 Honens International Piano Competition. Mr. Kolesnikov (age 23) receives the $100,000 Enbridge Prize (cash, CAD) and an artistic and career development program valued at a half million dollars - the largest award of its kind. Finalists Lorenzo Cossi (Italy), Maria Mazo (Russia), Jong-Hai Park (South Korea) and Eric Zuber (United States) each received $10,000 (CAD) prizes and semi-finalist Zenan Yu of China was awarded the $2,500 Raeburn Prize for Artist of Special Promise.
Sinfonia Toronto Kicks Off 2012-2013 Season Tonight, 10/27 by BWW News Desk
- October 27, 2012 Sinfonia Toronto has just announced its 2012-2013 season, the orchestra's 14th under the artistic direction of conductor Nurhan Arman. Next season the orchestra will again present a 7-concert Masterpiece Series featuring a rich variety of guest artists. All concerts except the season's opening concert will take place in Glenn Gould Studio. The series will open tonight, October 27 with a special Gala Concert at George Weston Recital Hall featuring the cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan. Mr. Hakhnazaryan became an instant sensation last June when he won the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow. Tonight's October 27 concert with Sinfonia Toronto will be Mr. Hakhnazaryan's Canadian debut.
