California Symphony Presents THE WIZARD OF OZ with Live Orchestra Accompaniment Tonight by BWW News Desk
- August 21, 2015 The California Symphony presents the beloved classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, and performs the complete, live orchestral accompaniment as the movie is shown on a giant screen at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, tonight, August 21 at 8:30 pm. Conductor Sarah Hicks leads the orchestra in some of the best-loved movie songs and music of all time, including Harold Arlen and E.Y. “Yip” Harburg's “Over the Rainbow,” “We're Off to See the Wizard,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” “Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead,” “The Merry Old Land of Oz,” and many more, as well as the underscore by composer Herbert Stothart. Judy Garland and the other actors' original vocal performances are preserved and enhanced, so they can be fully heard and enjoyed as the orchestra plays. The film's restored images are accompanied by the orchestra playing entirely new transcriptions of Harold Arlen's brilliant lost scores. The production is by Emmy Award-winning producer John Goberman (Live from Lincoln Center). Russian Choral Group Slavyanka Performs ALL-NIGHT VIGIL Tonight by BWW News Desk
- August 21, 2015 San Francisco, CA (June 25, 2015) – The 100th anniversary of the premiere of Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil (Vespers) will be celebrated with three performances of the choral work by Bay Area Russian choral ensemble Slavyanka tonight, August 21 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto, Saturday, August 22 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and Sunday, August 23 at First Congregational Church in Berkeley. Russian conductor and Slavyanka Artistic Director Irina Shachneva, an authority on Russian choral music, will lead the concerts.

LA Chamber Orchestra Welcomes Executive Director by BWW News Desk
- August 20, 2015 Accomplished arts executive Scott Harrison has been appointed Executive Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), announces LACO Board President Dana Newman. Harrison, who assumes his post on October 6, 2015, handles responsibility for providing the vision, strategic direction and oversight of the organization. Led by Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, LACO is considered one of the world's premier chamber orchestras. Harrison comes to LACO from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) where he served as Vice President for Advancement and External Relations. Having joined DSO in 2010 as Senior Director of Patron Engagement and Loyalty Programs, he was promoted to Executive Director of Board Engagement and Strategy in 2013 and to the Vice President role in 2014. Harrison's extensive background with major orchestras also includes work with the symphony orchestras of Indianapolis, New Jersey, Dallas and Boston. A bassoonist earlier in his career, Harrison performed with the Indianapolis Symphony, Shreveport Symphony and Dallas Wind Symphony, among others, in addition to performing on tour in the United Kingdom, Europe and Latin America. He has taught bassoon in the US, Haiti, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

- August 19, 2015 ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble opens its 2015-2016 season with a concert presented by Five Boroughs Music Festival at 7pm on Friday, September 11, 2015 at National Opera Center's Scorca Recital Hall. The program features music by ACME members Timo Andres (solo piano piece TBA), Caleb Burhans (Jahrzeit for string quartet), and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw (Gustave Le Grey), as well as Meredith Monk's rarely performed string quartet Stringsongs and Charles Ives' Piano Trio, Op. 86. The group will also present the world premiere of 5×5, a suite of five movements commissioned by Five Boroughs Music Festival, featuring musical contributions by each of the five composer-performers on the program - Shaw, Andres, and Burhans plus violinist Ben Russell and cellist/ACME artistic director Clarice Jensen.
