The National Philharmonic Features Chinese Gold Medal Pianist Haochen Zhang, Today

The National Philharmonic's 2016-2017 season at The Music Center at Strathmore continues on the Chinese New Year with Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Chinese gold medal pianist Haochen Zhang and Antonín Dvo?ák's Symphony No. 8 in G Major. Both will be led by Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski. Zhang and Gajewski are both former child prodigies. Since his gold medal win at the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the 26-year-old pianist has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe and Asia, with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination and spectacular virtuosity. The double performance will be held Today, January 28 at 8 pm. and Sunday, January 29 at 3 pm in the Concert Hall. There will be an audience question and answer session with Zhang and Gajewski after each performance. Ticket prices are $23-$78 and are free for children age 7-17. ROCO Brass Quintet Presents CROSSING OVER THE ENGLISH CHANNEL, Tonight!

In their second quintet program, the musicians of the RBQ will perform works of composers from either side of the English Channel (U.K. and France.) Summer Dances by William Mathias is a very lively work in 6 movements. Mathias' contemporary, Alun Hoddinott, also wrote a very charming work for brass quintet, about 8 years earlier than Mathias, based on Welsh nursery tunes. Patrice Caratini is a French jazz bassist who wrote a wonderful work for quintet, Passages, which crosses over between jazz and classical styles of music.

Thierry Fischer to Complete Brahms' Cycle with Utah Symphony in Two February Weekends

On February 3 and 4 at 7:30 PM, Maestro Fischer will conduct Brahms' Symphony No. 2 and Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture", in a concert that features guest artist Narek Hakhnazaryan debuting in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1. Maestro Fischer will return to the stage two weeks later to lead Brahms' Symphony No. 4 on February 24 and 25, concluding Brahms' symphony cycle in the Utah Symphony 2016-17 season. The February 24/25 concert will also include the U.S. premiere of Michael Jarrell's composition "Aquateinte" performed by guest oboist Francois Leleux, for whom the piece was written. These performances are both part of the O.C. Tanner Company Masterworks Series. Tickets start at $21 ($15 for students), and can be purchased at utahsymphony.org or by calling (801) 533-6683.

Violinist Rachel Barton Pine Leads LACO Baroque Conversations, 2/9

Rachel Barton Pine, a consummate violinist and master of the viola d'amore, leads Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) Baroque Conversations on Thursday, February 9, 2017, 7:30 pm, at Zipper Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.  The program includes Vivaldi's Concerto in D major for Viola d'amore and Orchestra and Concerto in D minor for Viola d'amore and Orchestra, two of his eight concertos for viola d'amore.  Also featured are Pisendel's Imitation des Caractères de la Danse and Locatelli's Concerto No. 12 in D major, from L'Arte del Violino, “The Harmonic Labyrinth.” 
Phillip Glass to Hold Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall in Celebration of 80th Birthday

In celebration of his 80th birthday year, esteemed American composer Philip Glass has been appointed to hold the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall for the 2017-2018 season. The yearlong residency will present performances that feature both Glass classics and premieres: American Composers Orchestra dedicates a program to composers inspired by Glass; the Philip Glass Ensemble and the San Francisco Girls Chorus perform his groundbreaking but rarely performed masterpiece, Music with Changing Parts, as part of the citywide festival The '60s: The Years that Changed America; notable premieres include a string quartet for the JACK Quartet and arrangements by composer Nico Muhly of lesser-known Glass songs-both Carnegie Hall commissions; additionally, the Louisiana Philharmonic andPacific Symphony both make their Carnegie Hall debuts in programs selected, in part, by Glass in response to invitations extended to U.S. orchestras to submit programs that place important works by the composer in illuminating contexts. BBC Concert Orchestra To Appoint Dobrinka Tabakova as New Composer in Residence

Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, has been invited to perform for the very first time at one of the world's most prestigious venues, Carnegie Hall in New York City, in honor of one of today's leading composers, Philip Glass. Joining them will be Pacific Chorale, also appearing at Carnegie Hall for the first time. One of America's most revered composers, Glass is Carnegie Hall's 2017-18 composer-in-residence, where he holds the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair. With this season-long residency by Glass, Carnegie joined a yearlong celebration of the composer's 80th birthday, presenting performances that feature his classics and premieres. As part of the residency, orchestras from across the United States were invited to submit programs featuring important works by Glass in illuminating contexts. Pacific Symphony and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra were the two orchestras chosen, in part by Glass himself, to perform during Carnegie's upcoming season. Both orchestras emerged among competitors with what Carnegie called “very compelling programs.”

Music by The Rob Levit Duo, a Golden Chance Raffle and special auction items will round out the evening. American Cellist Cicely Parnas Makes Her Brevard Symphony Orchestra Debut!

Music overflowing with the elegance and grace of four masterful French composers fills the program when the Brevard Symphony Orchestra presents The French Connection on Today, January 21, 2017, at the King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne. Gabriel Faure's sweetly somber Pavane opens the concert, followed by one of the most famous works for cello and orchestra - the First Cello Concerto by Camille Saint-Saens. Rising star Cicely Parnas makes her BSO debut with this tuneful showpiece. After intermission, two suites originally composed for piano are heard in their orchestral versions - Claude Debussy's charming Petite Suite is a setting of four miniature tone pictures. Maurice Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin salutes not just the great French Baroque master Francois Couperin - but also serves as a musical tribute to friends and colleagues of Ravel's who were lost during World War I.

Two ensemble programs of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) organization are performing in a free concert on Today, January 21 at 3 p.m. at the Temple Performing Arts Center, located at 1837 N. Broad Street in Philadelphia. The two ensembles are Tune Up Philly (TUP) and The Philadelphia Young Musicians Orchestra (PYMO).
