Los Angeles Master Chorale Presents WADE IN THE WATER, 4/30 by BWW News Desk
- March 28, 2017 The Los Angeles Master Chorale puts spirituals at the forefront of a concert called “Wade in the Water” to be performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday, April 30 at 7 PM. The concert features 13 songs with the spirituals juxtaposed with other folk music traditions such as early American shape note singing, as well as a contemporary Korean piece, and a pair of European choral masterpieces from the 20th century. The concert will feature 48 singers performing a cappella, conducted by Artistic Director Grant Gershon and Assistant Conductor Jenny Wong. The concert also provides an opportunity to highlight several of the Master Chorale's solo voices on the program.

Each broadcast airs at 8 pm on 89.1 FM and streams simultaneously online at www.wwfm.org. The programs will feature music by Tchaikovsky, Haydn, Strauss and more in performances led by Music Director Xian Zhang, recorded live at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. - March 23, 2017 The New York Choral Society (NYCHORAL) under the direction of its Music Director David Hayes will give the New York Premiere of celebrated Scottish composer James MacMillan's St. Luke Passion. NYCHORAL will be joined by organist Jason Roberts as well as the remarkable Brooklyn Youth Chorus under Artistic Director Dianne Berkun Menaker. James MacMillan's St. Luke Passion, written in 2013, is the second of four planned works, each based on one of the Gospels which aim to approach the differing passion accounts from contrasting stylistic per-spectives. - March 23, 2017 Hoff-Barthelson Music School's Annual Benefit Recital and Reception, the School's largest fundraising event of the year, takes place on Sunday, April 23, 2017, and features a recital by Carol Wincenc, one of today's greatest flutists, accompanied by the brilliant, young pianist Bryan Wagorn. Wincenc and Wagorn will perform works by Copland, Mozart, Debussy, and Fauré. Hoff-Barthelson flute students, faculty and alumni will join the pair for the final number—a lively baroque concerto for five flutes that will showcase Hoff-Barthelson's musical community at its finest. The event will be held in the recital hall of the CV Rich Mansion, a gorgeous Italianate Villa and begins with an intimate pre-concert reception for ticket holders at the Sponsor and Benefactor levels. - March 23, 2017 The New York Philharmonic Very Young People's Concerts (VYPCs), for children ages 3 to 6, will conclude its 12th season Sunday, April 30, 2017, at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and Monday, May 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 West 67th Street. The program, titled “Woodwinds,” is the final of three installments in Philharmonic Families, the season's theme that presents an overview of the entire orchestra. The “Woodwinds” program will feature Philharmonic musicians performing selections from Rossini's La gazza ladra Overture and Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin as well as “This Violist Went Wandering,” set to the tune of “Once an Austrian Went Yodeling.” Hosted again by Philharmonic Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young, the program will feature Philharmonic flutist Yoobin Son, Associate Principal Oboe Sherry Sylar, Acting Associate Principal Clarinet Pascual Martínez Forteza, guest bassoonist Harrison Miller, and horn player R. Allen Spanjer. Production designer Doug Fitch — with whom the Philharmonic has collaborated on several acclaimed staged productions, and who began his involvements in Philharmonic VYPCs in January 2017 — created artwork for the concert, which also features Philippe the Penguin, a character created for the series.

Named BBC Music magazine's 2015 Newcomer of the Year, Mr. Esfahani has traveled the globe, from Boston to Beijing, working tirelessly to prove that harpsichord is an instrument for today, not only relevant but even revolutionary. His concerts often juxtapose early music with works that are modern (even avant-garde), prompting cheers and jeers. His 92Y recital ranges from the English Renaissance to a new version of Steve Reich's Piano Phase, sanctioned by Reich himself.
