Pianist Jonathan Biss Replaces Leif Ove Andsnes In Recital At Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall today announced that pianist Leif Ove Andsnes must regrettably withdraw from his upcoming recital scheduled for Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage due to an injury to his elbow. Mr. Andsnes has canceled this concert and his US recital tour. Pianist Jonathan Biss steps in for Mr. Andsnes on the new program, which features three Beethoven piano sonatas. Music And Art Combine For A Concert At Evanston Art Center

Students from the Music Institute of Chicago's Academy, a training center for gifted pre-college musicians, are collaborating with the Evanston Art Center (EAC), 1717 Central Street, to perform the first collaboration of a new project, Melodies on Canvas, aiming to bring together the music and visual arts genres. The free concert takes place on Sunday, January 20 at 1:30 p.m.
San Diego Symphony Orchestra Appoints Edo De Waart As Its First Principal Guest Conductor

The San Diego Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) announced today that Edo de Waart has been appointed principal guest conductor. The renowned conductor begins his new role – a first for the organization – in the 2019-20 season conducting the orchestra for three to four weeks a year. The initial agreement is for three years. De Waart has been a featured guest conductor with SDSO during the past five seasons.

In Music for Change: The Banned Countries—a program that highlights the rich diversity of artistic voices from Muslim majority countries—Kronos Quartet explores musical traditions and soundscapes from more than ten predominantly Muslim nations, including Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The concert on Friday, February 8 at 9:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall features Iranian vocalist and activist Mahsa Vahdat.
Leon Fleisher Announces Updated Program For 90th Birthday Celebration At Carnegie Hall

Renowned pianist and pedagogue Leon Fleisher has updated the program for his celebratory 90th birthday recital at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall to include works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart, along with two selections by Leon Kirchner. Joining Mr. Fleisher on stage are notable friends and colleagues, Jonathan Biss and Yefim Bronfman, whom Mr. Fleisher has mentored throughout his illustrious career. Mr. Fleisher will also be joined by special guests the Dover Quartet and Rachel Calin on bass. Minnesota Orchestra Releases New Recording Of Mahler's Second Symphony

The Swedish label BIS Records is releasing its third album of the ongoing Mahler recording series in collaboration with Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra—a recording of Mahler's Second Symphony, Resurrection, also featuring soprano Ruby Hughes, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and the Minnesota Chorale. The album will be released on disc in the U.S. and Canada, and digitally worldwide, on February 1, 2019, but will be available in advance at Orchestra Hall and through the Minnesota Orchestra's website, minnesotaorchestra.org, beginning December 14, 2018.  
BISQC Announces New Collaboration With SMU Meadows School Of The Arts

The Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC) at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is thrilled to announce a new collaboration with the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University (SMU) that will give the 2019 First Prize Laureates a paid two-year residency in Dallas, Texas. This, in addition to generous cash prizes, residency opportunities at Banff Centre, and a three-year artistic and career development program, makes the triennial chamber music competition one of the top events of its kind. The 2019 competition runs from August 26 – September 1, and applications are now being accepted at bisqc.ca
