Pianist Mitsuko Uchida Returns To Carnegie Hall For Three Concerts This Spring

Renowned pianist Mitsuko Uchida returns to Carnegie Hall for three concerts this spring in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. On Friday, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. she joins the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (with whom she has been an Artistic Partner since 2016) for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 19 in F Major, K. 459 and Piano Concerto No. 20 in N*E*R*D Minor, K. 466, leading both works from the keyboard. The orchestra also performs Alban Berg's Three Pieces from the Lyric Suite (arr. for string orchestra) led by concertmaster Matthew Truscott.

The March 29 concert will be broadcast live on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York as part of the Carnegie Hall Live radio broadcast and digital series, also heard by listeners worldwide via wqxr.org and carnegiehall.org/wqxr. Produced by WQXR and Carnegie Hall and co-hosted by WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon and Clemency Burton-Hill, select Carnegie Hall Live broadcasts featured throughout the season include special digital access to the broadcast team from backstage and in the control room, connecting national and international fans to the music and to each other.

Ms. Uchida returns on Tuesday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 4 at 8:00 p.m. for solo recitals, continuing her multi-season exploration of Schubert's piano sonatas. Beginning in the 2017-2018 season, Ms. Uchida selected 12 of Schubert's major works for piano and has been performing them in major concert halls across Europe and North America.

About the Artists
A superlative interpreter of Classical, early Romantic and Second Viennese School repertoire, Mitsuko Uchida performs with the world's most respected orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra; and conductors including Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski, and Andris Nelsons. In 2016 Mitsuko Uchida was named Artistic Partner of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, embarking on a five-year touring project together. She also appears regularly in recitals in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, London, New York, and Tokyo, and is a regular guest at the Salzburg Mozartwoche and Salzburg and Edinburgh International Festivals.

Mitsuko Uchida records exclusively for Decca and her extensive discography includes the complete Mozart and Schubert piano sonatas. She received a Grammy in 2011 for her recording of Mozart concerti directing The Cleveland Orchestra, and in 2017 for an album of lieder with Dorothea Röschmann. Her recording of the Schoenberg Piano Concerto with Pierre Boulez and The Cleveland Orchestra won four awards, including the Gramophone Award for Best Concerto.

A trustee of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust and Director of Marlboro Music Festival, Ms. Uchida was awarded the 2015 Golden Mozart Medal from the Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association. She was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2012 and received an Honorary Degree from the University of Cambridge in 2014.

Mitsuko Uchida was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2009.

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) was founded in 1997 based on the shared vision of being a free and international ensemble, dedicated to creating and sharing exceptional experiences in classical music. With 45 members spanning 20 different countries at its core, the MCO works as a nomadic collective of passionate musicians uniting for specific tours in Europe and across the world. It has, to date, performed in over 40 countries across five continents. The MCO is governed collectively by its management team and orchestra board; decisions are made democratically with the participation of all musicians.

The MCO's sound is characterized by the chamber music style of ensemble playing among its alert and independent musical personalities. The orchestra received its most significant artistic impulses from its founding mentor, Claudio Abbado, and from Conductor Laureate Daniel Harding. Pianist Mitsuko Uchida, violinist Pekka Kuusisto and conductor Teodor Currentzis are current Artistic Partners who inspire and shape the orchestra during long-term collaborations. Concertmaster Matthew Truscott leads and directs the orchestra regularly in its performances of chamber orchestra repertoire.

The MCO's Education & Outreach projects include Feel the Music, which opens the world of music to deaf and hard of hearing children through workshops in schools and concerts halls, and the MCO Academy, through which MCO musicians work with the next generation of musicians to provide a high quality orchestral experience and platform for international exchange.

The MCO's major projects in recent years include the award-winning Beethoven Journey with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, who led the complete Beethoven concerto cycle from the keyboard in international residences. In 2012, the MCO premiered the opera Written on Skin at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence under the baton of composer George Benjamin, with whom the orchestra shares a close musical friendship. The MCO's current partnership with Mitsuko Uchida, centred on Mozart's piano concertos, includes multi-year residences at Salzburg's Mozartwoche, London's Southbank Centre and Carnegie Hall.
