Brevard, NC: The Brevard Music Center (BMC) Board of Trustees and President Mark Weinstein have agreed to a five year contract extension that will keep Weinstein at the helm of the renowned institution through its 80th anniversary season in 2016, and beyond. Weinstein will continue to work with the board, staff, and Artistic Director Keith Lockhart to implement a long-term vision and strategy for the 78-year-old summer institute and festival.
Weinstein's first year has been highlighted by sustained artistic excellence, increased audience attendance, and large gains in development and fund-raising. Weinstein has spearheaded national artistic and strategic partnerships, and has worked tirelessly to build deeper connections between BMC and the local and regional community.
"At the Brevard Music Center we stand on the shoulders of seventy-eight years of history and artistry," said Mr. Weinstein. "I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful community, and I am committed to BMC reaching its full potential - locally, regionally, and nationally."
Weinstein holds a BA from Carleton College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has a distinguished 35-year career in the arts having served as Executive Director of the New York City Opera, General Director of the Pittsburgh Opera, Executive Director of the Washington National Opera, and CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas. Most recently he worked as a consultant serving performing arts groups in Washington, D.C.
"Mr. Weinstein has brought to BMC his wealth of experience and proven track record in fundraising, marketing, and management" stated Falls Harris, chair of the Music Center's Board of Trustees. "He has joined the Brevard Music Center at a seminal moment in our history and is leading this venerable institution as we look towards our very bright future."
BMC Artistic Director Keith Lockhart shared his enthusiasm for the announcement, saying, "I am thrilled to have a strong partner, fully capable of and invested in supporting the mission of the Brevard Music Center."
The Brevard Music Center is currently in preparations for its 2015 Summer Festival, which runs from June 20 through August 2.
HISTORY
The Brevard Music Center originated in 1936 as a summer music camp at Davidson College. James Christian Pfohl, the Music Center's founder and first Artistic Director, moved his operation to Queens College in Charlotte for the summer of 1943, then to the current location in 1944. Pfohl added a festival of concerts at the end of the 1946 session. Over time the camp became an institute, and the festival came to run the full length of the summer season.
In 2014 Brevard Music Center enrolled more than 400 students from nearly every state, plus students from Europe, Asia, and South America. Sixty-five professional musicians, representing major orchestras and distinguished music schools, comprise the artist faculty. Students, faculty, and staff all reside on the 180-acre wooded campus in western North Carolina. The Brevard Music Center has emerged as one of America's premier summer training programs for young musicians.
