BWW Reviews: GEVA Theatre Center Presents TWO TRAINS RUNNING
by Mary Hanrahan - April 09, 2010
It seems only appropriate that Rochester's Geva Theatre Center would transition from Arthur Miller's The Price to August Wilson's Two Trains Running; comparatively speaking, however, Wilson has given Miller a run for his money. Ron OJ Parson's exhilarating production of Two Trains Running, the fourth fully mounted play of Geva's celebration of Wilson and the seventh in his famed Pittsburgh Cycle, gives its audience what The Price never could: an entertaining, well-paced, and (dare I say) priceless night of theater.

BWW Reviews: Irish Players of Rochester Present THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN
by Mary Hanrahan - March 30, 2010
Ireland mustn't be such a bad place, so - but it certainly isn't devoid of faults or wickedness. This is made entirely clear in The Cripple of Inishmaan, Martin McDonagh's darkly comic and touching work about a physically challenged young man's dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. The spritely production currently being mounted by the Irish Players of Rochester, a subset of Rochester Community Players, gives its audience just the right balance of sentimentality and harsh absurdity. Under Jean Gordon Ryon's direction, McDonagh's comical drama about the nature of lies, gossip, and identity makes for a night of quality entertainment.

BWW Reviews: Geva Theatre Center's PRICE Too Taxing
by Mary Hanrahan - March 02, 2010
Given the current economic climate, Rochester's Geva Theatre Center's production of Arthur Miller's The Price, a drama incited by two brothers selling their deceased father's possessions, would appear to be perfectly timed. The heavy ties between identity and the struggle to live a purposeful, content life in capitalistic society are explored in depth, and the questions and uncertainty felt by the characters certainly resonate with a modern audience. Timothy Bond's production of the play starts off strongly but ultimately flounders as it reaches its conclusion.
