Michelle Sutherland's EMILY DICKINSON OUTER SPACE! to Play Bushwick Starr, 9/4-9/6

In a three-day marathon performance that is part intergalactic jam session and part haunted house party, Emily Dickinson OUTER SPACE! explores the uncharted dimensions of Dickinson's poetry in search of what it means to be American, wild, and free. A performance event as vast as the cosmos, this is the second installment in The POP Trilogy from award-winning artist collective Theater Plastique (Gertrude Stein SAINTS!). Following a workshop performance at The Fury Factory Festival of Ensemble Theater in San Francisco in July 2014, Emily Dickinson OUTER SPACE returns to her native coast this September at The Bushwick Starr. Over the course of 72 continuous hours, the doors of the theater will remain open for a performance event featuring 88 singers, dancers, and musicians wherein Theater Plastique invites the vastness of Dickinson's poetry to again build a universe within a single room.

Introduced by Professor Louis Leonini, Gatti and his company-Broadway veteran PJ Nelson, and community theater veterans John Mangini, Charles Milo and Al Pica-will perform songs in tribute to Dean Martin and Connie Francis, along with Broadway classics, excerpts from operas, and a preview of Gatti's upcoming cabaret show, "PJ Plus 4."

The Bushwick Starr and Studio 42 will present the world premiere production of Important Hats of the Twentieth Century by Nick Jones (Emmy-nominated for Orange is the New Black, Trevor), directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God, Trevor).The production will run from October 7th through 31st, 2015, at The Bushwick Starr. The cast and full creative team will be announced in the spring of 2015.

This year, the floating home of the Waterfront Museum turns 100 years old. The vessel, the Lehigh Valley No. 79 is the only one of its kind still afloat in NY harbor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. By following her 100-year history, 'Out of the Box & Over a Barrel,' tells the saga of commerce, transportation and the lives of the people of the working harbor in the age of lighterage. Along the 'Water Belt Line,' barges, (called lighters) and tugboats were the only link between ships and railways, moving goods across the harbor. 'Out of the Box' tells the story of this bustling era in NYC history before bridges and tunnels. Based on true stories using maps, models, puppets and historic photographs, this multi-discipline show aims to entertain and enlighten audiences about what this last-surviving wooden barge carried and the families and captains who lived on them.

Performing Arts Festival, BRIC will honor the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with Vote, It Ain't Illegal Yet!, a special multimedia concert directed by author/filmmaker/journalist Nelson George. The evening, presented Squarespace, will include contributions from Burning Spear, Vernon Reid, Maya Azucena, Roger Guenveur Smith, Carl Hancock Rux, Ramya Ramana and more. D-Nice provides musical direction. The concert, which begins at 7:30 P.M. with a performance by Fredericks Brown, is free to the public (with a suggested $3 contribution at the gate).

Register for Italian Language Class in the Fall Now and Save

Registration for the fall semester of Italian language classes at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is now open. The 12-week semester begins September 15, with 90-minute classes offered weekdays, weekends and evenings to accommodate most schedules, for students of all levels of proficiency. Weekday classes will be taught by Rose Frisari on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, weekend classes will be taught by Professor Louis Leonini on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and evening classes will be taught by Maria Bonavita on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes are limited to a maximum of 20 students and minimum of 10. Tuition is $165 for non-members and $150 for museum members and must be paid in advance.
