  3. Classic Silent Film Night with LIVE MUSIC! Charlie Chaplin's THE GOLD RUSH, Sat., Nov. 29 at 7pm

What to do with those pesky Thanksgiving weekend guests? Join us for a special 100th Anniversary Celebration of Charlie Chaplin’s favorite film, The Gold Rush, on a big screen with LIVE MUSIC accompaniment from internationally acclaimed silent film musicians Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton. There will also be a Sing-A-Long of songs from the 1920s.

The Gold Rush is a 1925 American silent comedy film written, produced, and directed by Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin stars in the film (in his Little Tramp persona) as the Lone Prospector, who heads north to join an estimated 100,000 prospectors in the Klondike Gold Rush in Yukon, western Canada.

Chaplin’s famous rogue figure becomes a gold-digger determined to face all the pitfalls associated with the search for gold, such as sickness, hunger, cold, loneliness, or the possibility that he may at any time be attacked by bears.

Trapped in a small cabin by a blizzard, the Tramp is forced to share close quarters with a successful prospector, Big Jim (Mack Swain) and a fugitive, Black Larsen (Tom Murray). Eventually able to leave the cabin, he falls for a lovely dance hall girl, Georgia (Georgia Hale) and tries valiantly to win her affections. When Big Jim needs help relocating his claim, it appears the Tramp's fortunes may change.

Live, original music will be performed during the film by Joanna Seaton and Donald Sosin. They are among the world’s foremost silent film musicians, bringing their unique blend of keyboards, vocals, and percussion to film festivals worldwide, from Lincoln Center to Bangkok. They have performed at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Music Mountain, and are favorite guest artists at the National Gallery and at Italy’s annual silent film retrospectives in Pordenone and Bologna. They have created scores for over 65 silent film DVDs on the Criterion, KinoLorber, Milestone, Flicker Alley and European labels.
