BIKEncerto: a concerto for solo bicycle and orchestra is a live performance by Somerville-based percussionist and composer Reynaliz Herrera, presented as part of a Spring/Summer tour supported by a Live Arts Boston grant from The Boston Foundation. The work features Herrera as bicycle percussion soloist alongside her ensemble Ideas, Not Theories, and reconciles her classical conservatory training with her decade-long exploration of the bicycle as a musical instrument. Each movement isolates a distinct sonic characteristic of the bicycle — from tuned tire pressures to spoke-derived melodic fragments to the metallic resonance of frames and rims — treated with the same rigor applied to conventional orchestral instruments. The piece received recognition on The Boston Globe's "Best of Boston Music" 2023 list and has earned awards from the Global Music Awards, among other accolades.
