Photos: OEDIPUS EL REY At The Huntington

Rehearsals are underway for The Huntington’s upcoming production of Oedipus el Rey by Luis Alfaro, directed by Artistic Director Loretta Greco. The production will run May 7 through June 7, 2026, in an intimate thrust configuration at the Calderwood Pavilion’s Roberts Theatre. Check out photos of the cast.

The staging reunites Greco and Alfaro approximately 16 years after their collaboration on the play’s original world premiere at the Magic Theatre. The production also marks a return of Alfaro’s work to Boston, where it has not been seen since earlier projects with The Theater Offensive and the OutWrite Conference in the 1990s.

“It’s such a joy to see Oedipus el Rey making its debut in Boston, where I spent a considerable amount of my time as an up-and-coming artist, first in poetry, performance art, and finally, theater,” said playwright Luis Alfaro. “I always wished that this play’s themes would lose their resonance as we continue to practice democracy in our culture. Instead, our reliance on the prison industrial complex has continued to grow and become a fabric of American life. The classic Greek play asks us one question of how we make society, ‘Is it destiny or is it fate?’ and we continue to wrestle with these ideas in our public spaces of inquiry, the theatre being one of vital spirituality and importance. I can’t wait to see what audiences think.”

The cast includes Juan Arturo as Oedipus, Gabe Martínez as Laius, Melisa Soledad Pereyra as Jocasta and Esfinge, Jaime José Hernández as Creon, Victor Almanzar as Tiresias, and Javier David as El Sobador.
