Lyric Stage Announces Cast, Creative Team for COMPANY

The Lyric Stage Company of Boston announces the cast & creative team for COMPANY, with Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and Book by George Furth.

Directed by Spiro Veloudos with music director Catherine Stornetta and choreography & musical staging by Rachel Bertone, COMPANY will run September 2 - October 9, 2016. Press opening is Sunday, September 4 at 3 p.m.

A ground-breaking musical, Company is a prescient, insightful, and often hilarious look at modern relationships. Directing Company for the first time, Spiro Veloudos, "the best director of Sondheim in Boston," (WBUR), brings the story of Bobby's 35th birthday up to the present day, illuminating the vitality of this mature, intelligent, and wildly funny affirmation of marriage, relationships, and "being alive."

COMPANY is the winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, and Best Book. Originally Produced and Directed on Broadway by Harold Prince. Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick.

Stephen Sondheim (Music and Lyrics) wrote the music and lyrics for Saturday Night (1954), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), The Frogs (1974), Pacific Overtures (1976), Sweeney Todd (1979), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Assassins (1991), Passion (1994), and Road Show (2008), as well as lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959), and Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965) and additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Anthologies of his work include Side by Side by Sondheim (1976), Marry Me a Little (1981), You're Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983), Putting It Together (1993/99), and Sondheim on Sondheim (2010). He composed the scores of the films Stavisky (1974) and Reds (1981), and songs for Dick Tracy (1990) and the television production Evening Primrose (1966). His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: "Finishing the Hat" (2010) and "Look, I Made A Hat" (2011). In 2010 the Broadway theater formerly known as Henry Miller's Theatre was renamed in his honor.

George Furth (Book) was born in Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University; he did postgraduate work at Columbia University. He has worked extensively as an actor, appearing in many feature films, including The Best Man, Oh God!, Doctor Detroit, Young Doctors In Love, The Man With Two Brains, Cannonball Run, Hooper, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Blazing Saddles, Shampoo, Sleeper, The New Interns and Myra Breckinridge; he has also acted in many major television shows. In addition to Company, he has written the Broadway shows The Act, Twigs, The Supporting Cast, Merrily We Roll Along, Precious Sons, and Getting Away With Murder.

John Ambrosino* (Robert) returns to the Lyric Stage having performed in Into the Woods, On the Town, and Avenue Q. John spent two years in the Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys (Las Vegas). Other credits The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley (First National Tour), Do Re Mi, When Midnight Strikes (off Broadway). Regional work includes Rent (New Rep), Pageant (Stoneham Theater), and The Wild Party (Provincetown Theater). John is also a producing partner with U Rock Theatricals in New York City - a commercial theater Production Company that is developing the 1995 Academy Award Winning short film Trevor into a musical for Broadway.

Elise Arsenault* (Susan) returns to the Lyric Stage having previously appeared in My Fair Lady, City of Angels, Into the Woods (IRNE award, Best Ensemble) and Avenue Q (Elliott Norton, Best Ensemble). Recent area credits include Avenue Q, Diary of Anne Frank, King & I (Ocean State Theatre), Beat Generation (Merrimack Rep), Miracle on 34th Street (Stoneham Theatre),The Taming of the Shrew (Colonial Theater), and Footloose (Ivoryton Playhouse). Elise has performed, directed, and facilitated workshops throughout the country with numerous organizations, including the Smithsonian Institute, The Lady Project and Washington National Opera. Television credits include Momsters: When Moms Go Bad (DiscoveryID). As a voiceover artist, she can be heard on commercials and narrating audiobooks. Graduate of George Mason University and the British American Drama Academy.

Leigh Barrett* (Joanne) has been seen at the Lyric Stage in Sondheim on Sondheim, City of Angels, Grey Gardens, Souvenir, Nicholas Nickelby, Big River, Animal Crackers, Follies, A Little Night Music, Mikado, Nuncrackers, and Sunday in the Park with George. Recently Leigh appeared in Mud Blue Sky with Bridge Rep. Teresa Winner Blume (Jenny) returns to the Lyric Stage having previously performed in Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and The Mikado. Other local theatre credits include Floyd Collins, Company, and Lucky Stiff (Moonbox Productions), Goblin Market and Ragdoll (premiere) (Blue Spruce). She has also appeared in concerts, operas, operettas and recitals with the North Carolina Symphony, New England Light Opera, Opera Carolina, Piedmont Opera, Gordon College Faculty Artist Series, and the Boston Singers Resource Recital Series, among others. Teresa earned degrees in classical vocal performance from the University of Illinois and the Eastman School of Music, and collaborates frequently with composers from the New Opera and Musical Theatre Initiative in Boston. She directs a summer musical theatre camp for children in Needham, maintains a private home voice studio, and is raising two lovely daughters with her devoted husband. Teresa serves as the Head of the Voice Program at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick.

Adrianne Hick* (April) is making her Lyric Stage debut. She has most recently starred in multiple productions of South Pacific (Wick Theatre, FL and Ivoryton Playhouse, CT) and has been seen in the Broadway National Tour of LES MISERABLES , the critically acclaimed Sondheim revue You're Gonna Love Tomorrow (Bickford Theatre, NJ), The Sensational '70's (Fireside Theatre), Other People's Money (Hampton Theatre Co., NY), Through the Invisible Door (MTL), and in NYC in The Laramie Project and Charles Strouse's Dancing With Time. Featured in Backstage Magazine as a "Breakout Talent," she has appeared as a featured vocalist and guest entertainer aboard Holland America Line and NCL. Up next, Adrianne's adventures include the South Korean tour of Jekyll & Hyde ?(2016-17) and marrying the love of her life! Special thanks to her Quincy family. Proud member of AEA.

CarlA Martinez* (Marta) returns to the Lyric Stage having appeared in My Fair Lady last fall. Will McGarrahan* (Larry) returns to Lyric Stage where he performed in Peter and the Starcatcher, Light Up the Sky, Into the Woods, Death of a Salesman, Becky's New Car, The Chosen, The Temperamentals, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Grey Gardens, November, Souvenir and Dirty Blonde. Davron S. Monroe* is returning to the Lyric Stage after having appeared in My Fair Lady, City of Angels, Sweeney Todd, One Man, Two Guvnors, The Mikado, Avenue Q, and Ain't Misbehavin'. Musical theatre credits include: Godspell (Moonbox Productions), Hairspray (Reagle Music Theatre), Dreamgirls, Jesus Christ Superstar, Children of Eden, Songs for a New World (premiere, Key West Symphony, Broadway Across America), Smokey Joe's Café, Cinderella, Streakin'!, a '70s musical revue, Sweet Charity, Brigadoon, and Show Boat. Cabaret: The All Night Strut. Opera: fully staged or concert/scene productions of Carmen, Treemonisha, Porgy and Bess, La finta giardiniera, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, La fille du régiment, L'élisir d'amore, Così fan tutte, Die Fledermaus, The Tailor of Gloucester, The Gondoliers, Aida, and Die Zauberflöte. Mr. Monroe premiered the role of Thomas Edison in Juventas's New Music Group production of Light and Power. He has also appeared with many orchestral and vocal organizations, such as Boston Landmarks Orchestra (Lost in the Stars - a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech, and The Chariot Jubilee), the First Church UU, Belmont, the Brevard Music Center (finalist, Orlando Opera's Heinz Rehfuss Singing Actor Awards), Disney Entertainment's Voices of Liberty, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Key West Symphony (young artist), Houston Ebony Opera Guild, the New England Spiritual Ensemble, New England Voices, the Longy School Orchestra, and many other organizations throughout the greater Boston area. Davron is the first recipient of the Bob Jolly Award for up-and-coming local actors.

Tyler Simahk (Paul) returns to the Lyric Stage having appeared in Fast Company and Peter and the Starcatcher. Other regional credits include Sister Act (Ogunquit Playhouse and Gateway Playhouse), and La Cage aux Folles (Reagle Players). Tyler received a B.F.A. in musical theater from Emerson College. Erica Spyres* (Amy) just appeared at the Lyric Stage in Peter and the Starcatcher, and previously in Into the Woods, Avenue Q (IRNE Award), Time Stands Still, The Mikado, Big River, and Nicholas Nickleby. Recent credits include the French premiere of Passion (Théâtre du Châtelet) and Once (first National Tour), Tribes (Elliot Norton Award), The Light in the Piazza (IRNE Award) (SpeakEasy Stage), Camelot (IRNE Award), Marry Me a Little, Master Class (New Rep), Pirates! (Huntington Theatre). Erica coaches for My College Audition and can be seen and heard on commercials and voiceovers across the nation.

Kerri Wilson (Sarah) is making her Lyric Stage debut. Recent credits include Sweet Charity (Stoneham Theatre), Hairspray (Wheelock Family Theatre), 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee (Priscilla Beach Theatre), Ragtime (Fiddlehead Theatre). Other area credits include Breaking Up Is Hard to Do, Legally Blonde, Anne of Green Gables, and Chorus Line. Todd Yard (David) is making his Lyric Stage debut. Recent credits include The Wild Party (Moonbox Productions), A Little Night Music (Nextdoor Theater), Carousel (Reagle Music Theatre), La Cage aux Folles (The Umbrella), Is He Dead? (Vokes Players), and Spamalot (The Footlight Club). Todd graduated from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts musical theatre program in London and now works as a Principal Architect with Brightcove in Boston developing cloud video solutions for a global client list.

Matthew Zahnzinger (Peter) is making his Lyric Stage debut with Company, a show he first explored with Moonbox Productions. Other regional credits include: Crazy for You (Reagle Music Theatre), Arcadia (Nora Theatre Company), Polish Joke (IRNE award-Titanic Theatre), The Importance of Being Earnest, A New Brain, Floyd Collins, Lucky Stiff (Moonbox Productions), Reader, Copenhagen (Flat Earth Theatre), The Singularity (Science Fiction Theatre), Chess, Rock N' Roll, The Secret Garden (Longwood Players), and 6 Hotels (Hub Theatre). Matthew is also a regular voice over performer with the Colonial Radio Theatre, and has performed with the Peterborough Players in New Hampshire and the Lost Nation Theatre in Vermont. A Brockton native, Matthew holds in B.A. in Theatre and English from Northeatern University, and has studied at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland.

Spiro Veloudos (Director/Producing Artistic Director), now in his 19th season as Producing Artistic Director of the Lyric Stage, directed Sondheim by Sondheim and Peter and the Starcatcher last season. In previous seasons, he directed Sweeney Todd, City of Angels, Into the Woods (Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards for Best Director, Best Musical, and Best Ensemble), One Man, Two Guvnors, Death of a Salesman (IRNE Award for Best Play),The Mikado, 33 Variations, On the Town, Avenue Q (Elliot Norton Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Ensemble, five IRNE Awards including Best Musical and Best Director), The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (Elliot Norton Award for Best Production and Best Director, five IRNE Awards including Best Director), Big River, Superior Donuts, Animal Crackers, Blithe Spirit, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, and Kiss Me, Kate. His numerous directing credits at the Lyric Stage include A Little Night Music (IRNE Award for Direction), Glengarry Glen Ross (IRNE Award), Sunday in the Park with George (Best of the Year in Boston's Globe, Herald, and Phoenix; Elliot Norton and IRNE Award for direction), Assassins (Best Production of 1998: The Boston Globe), Lost in Yonkers, Never the Sinner: The Leopold and Loeb Story (Elliot Norton Award, along with Assassins), and Speed-the-Plow (Elliot Norton for Outstanding Production). Mr. Veloudos received StageSource's Theatre Hero Award (2003) and was named Best Artistic Director by Boston Magazine in 1999. He serves as the president for the Producers' Association of New England Area Theatres, and is adjunct faculty in Performing Arts at Emerson College.

Catherine Stornetta (Music Director) has been the music director at the Lyric Stage for Animal Crackers, Ain't Misbehavin', Avenue Q, 33 Variations, One Man, Two Guvnors, City of Angels, and most recently, My Fair Lady. She is also a musical director for Forbidden Broadway, Forbidden Hollywood, and Forbidden Christmas, and has performed in all but four states, on cruise ships circumnavigating the globe, and once, after being bitten by a dog, with only her right hand and left thumb. She has orchestrated both Forbidden Broadway and Forbidden Christmas and as a result has conducted the Detroit, Hartford, Winnipeg, North Carolina, Rochester, Syracuse, and Adelaide (Australia) Symphonies. She was the musical director for the three-year run of Menopause, The Musical in Boston. She composed the score for the Cable ACE-award winning documentary Christa McAuliffe, Teacher in Space, produced for the Arts and Entertainment Network "Biography" series, and she has arranged and written music for several shows: Intriguing People (for People Magazine), 12 Angry Reindeer, and All-of-a-Kind Family, as well as shows for the Unione Parke Singers: Reindeer Games, 100 Years of Song, The Seasons, and Oh Look, You're 80!, In her salad days, she was an occasional soloist with the Boston Pops

Rachel Bertone (Choreography and Musical Staging) returns to the Lyric Stage having previously choreographed City of Angels, Big River, and Animal Crackers. Recent Directing/Choreographing credits include Carousel (Reagle Music Theatre), The Wild Party, The Musical of Musicals (Moonbox Productions), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Turtle Lane Playhouse), and Creative License (NYCFringe). Choreography credits include Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, LES MISERABLES, My Fair Lady (Reagle Music Theatre), Company, A New Brain, Floyd Collins, Lucky Stiff (Moonbox Productions), West Side Story (Turtle Lane Playhouse), A Little Night Music (Metro Stage). Janie E. Howland** (Scenic Design) continues a long-standing relationship with the Lyric Stage including h My Fair Lady, Peter and the Starcatcher last season. Rafael Jaen** (Costume Design) has been designing costumes for more than 25 years. His most recent work includes Buyer & Cellar (Lyric Stage), The Pronoun, Aimez-Vous Ionesco?, Madame LeMonde (BeauJest Moving Theatre ), Krazy Kat (Bowdoin College), Museum, Polaroid Stories (UMass Boston), and Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them (Company One). He sits on the USITT Board of Directors, and he is the national Design-Technology Chair for the Kennedy Center ACTF. He is the recipient of the Salem State Life Achievement Award in the Arts 2016 and the Kennedy Center (KCACTF) Golden Medallion for Excellence in Theater Education 2013. Franklin Meissner, Jr.** (Lighting Design) returns to the Lyric Stage after designing the lighting for Peter and the Starcatcher, Sweeney Todd (IRNE award), By The Way, Meet Vera Stark, Avenue Q, Ain't Misbehavin', and The Understudy. Recently he designed the lighting for Sweet Charity at the Stoneham Theatre, where he also designed Romeo and Juliet, My Fair Lady, A Christmas Carol, Strangers on a Train, Pageant and Miracle on 34th Street. This past winter he designed the lighting for Mary Poppins (Wheelock Family Theatre, Elliot Norton Award, Outstanding Design), where he also designed Oliver!, The Secret Garden, The Phantom Tollbooth and The Wizard of Oz. He has designed extensively for New Rep, including The Snow Queen (IRNE award), Little Shop of Horrors, The Wild Party, Cabaret, Dessa Rose, Sweeney Todd (IRNE award), Into The Woods, Ragtime, Moby Dick (IRNE award) and many others.
