I got mine in the mail today and am thoroughly enjoying it. I miss some of the richer orchestrations from Bounce, but on the whole, this is more enjoyable. It will hopefully give this fascinating show the afterlife it richly deserves. I'll post more thoughts on the album after a few more listens.
I'm loving it. I'm so glad it was recorded. Even if the wait was a little exhausting. I hope a few regional theatres around the country recognize the brilliance and decide to put it on.
I think ROAD SHOW is a vast improvement over BOUNCE. The only number I prefer from Bounce is "Boca Raton", I was really upset they cut the amazing end section of song for Road Show.
My only "irk" with the recording is the missing opening trumpet fanfare, and the extended vamp of "Waste." Also the chords/orchestrations for the end of the finale differ from what was heard in the theater.
Overall, I think this is the best version of the score. And yes, I've heard WISE GUYS. Updated On: 6/30/09 at 08:54 PM
ijay889, was there ever a studio recording of Wise Guys? I know there was no commercial cast album, but I notice there is a listing for a 'workshop recording' on castalbumcollector.com, and I read something about a demo recording - but I'm not sure.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Well, if we're going to talk about what we miss I really miss "Opportunity" and "What's Your Rush", but I still think they got it right this time. Or close to it.
I love the cd, but some of the melodies are VERY similar to Assassins, almost uncomfortably so, as if Sondheim just took Assassins and made minor adjustments. Listen to the first few chords of "Waste" and then "Everybody's Got the Right" and then you'll see what I'm saying...
Apparently "It's in your hands now" is melodically a cut song from Assassins which is also interesting. I haven't read the booklet yet but it's in there..or so I heard. Listening to the album for the first time in a second :).

Can someone who has an account on ATC go to this topic "Road Show recording- SHOCKING price!" and say you can buy the album (MP3s) off Nonesuch's website at a higher quality for $10.

I must say that "The Best Thing that Ever Has Happened," especially on this recording, is one of the best love songs Sondheim has ever written. I was crying both times I heard it when I saw Road Show.
Actually I just noticed iTunes plus is 256 kbps AAC of the new iTunes Plus tracks is about the same as the 320 kbps MP3 of Nonesuch so I take that back. Though my main point was if they don't want to pay $13 they can buy it elsewhere for less.

I love the final line. I didn't get to see the show so it was a surprise to me. Was that intended to be a "wink" to those who've been following the various incarnation of the show or was it just coincidental?
I've had more time to listen to it and I have to say that the only things I miss from Bounce are the larger orchestrations and that version of "Boca Raton." Other than that, it's an absolute improvement, as the show at the Public was. I was happy to see it recorded. Now if only Happiness will get an album.
