I'm sure this has been asked already at some point, but does anybody have the new translations for West Side Story? I can't seem to find them anywhere online yet!
Just pop in your DVD and pick Spanish as your language, you'd be surprised how much was already translated.
- I just did that for "A Boy Like that", and Lin's translation is almost completely different, save for 3-4 words. The phrases are completely different. Lin didn't do exact translations. Sondheim allowed him to change the imagery of the lyrics. Updated On: 6/15/09 at 02:35 PM
Lin Manuel MIranda interpreted Sondheim's lyrics and to a point re-wrote both songs (and the Sharks part in the Quintet) using the originals as a blueprint. "A Boy Like That" is the one that changes the most--probably since it's such an emotional number and he had to find the right way to express this. In a way, Karen Olivo's interpretation stems from the new lyrics ("por favor, Maria, por favor"). Miranda's translation includes a curse word ("cabron"), calls Tony a robber, and stresses the racial differences between the groups (she calls Tony an American). It's an interesting translation, and while gramatically awkward (and I think plain wrong at one point) in a lot of places, I've gotten more and more used to it with repeated listenings. Xoffender, I'm busy working right now, but later tonight I woudn't mind typing up the Spanish lyrics. Did you try google.com?
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
The Spanish translation done for this WEST SIDE STORY revival are atrocious. The English lyrics were not translated verbatim -- they basically created a whole new set of lyrics... in Spanish.
The lyrics on the 1961 film-version's DVD are basically the English lyrics translated into Spanish. Though they would't work singing them in rhythm to the set music, at least the translation is Stephen Sondheim's original lyrics... just in Spanish.
I was scratching my head when I saw the revival and heard those re-written Spanish lyrics.
I'll post the English translation of those 'new' Spanish lyrics later when I get home so everyone can have their WTF moment of the day.
^ Thanks for your thoughts, Ray. I love having Anita sing "por favor, Maria, por favor". Having her sing that further validates why I believe Karen's version is more of a desperate plead with Maria, opposed to a fit of anger and reprimanding. Updated On: 6/15/09 at 02:57 PM

- Um. That was kind of the point. Sondheim was always unhappy with his lyrics for this show, and he was more than happy to have Lin change them. He specifically told Lin that he could change the imagery, but he had to keep the rhyme scheme.
Anyway, It would have been impossible to translate them word for word and stay true to the music. Updated On: 6/15/09 at 03:03 PM
I have tried Google, but they only have the odd line here and there. No full lyrics. As a Cuban and a Spanish-speaker, I LOVE the new translations, and just wanted the lyrics so I can sing along. lol

I'm still waiting for my CD to ship, but a lovely friend typed me up her copy. :) I am obsessed with the Spanish lyrics already.
Thanks NityaC. Xoffender, I completely get you. One of the reasons I got the CD was because I really wanted the lyrics to sing along, there was one part during "A Boy Like That" where I had no clue what Karen was singing and it was driving me crazy ("y desolada te encontraras").
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Thank you SO MUCH,NityaC! These really are great translations. I absolutely love them. Especially using "cabron" in A Boy Like That. Very powerful!
I can't wait to go up to NYC soon to see this.
Slightly off topic, it kind of irks me that Josefina sings "hold my hand and we're halfway *dere*" in the Finale. lol... I know that she has an accent, but eeek.
Updated On: 6/15/09 at 03:20 PM
NityaC, now I'm getting picky, but can you post the full lyrics to the Quintet, please? I'm having a little bit of a hard time decyphering who says what where towards the end, when everyone's singing
No problem! Like I said, a friend sent them to me. I figured I needed to know the words for what they are, instead of my imitate-the-sound mesh of a Spanish.
I adore Josefina's English, "dere" and all. I only heard a sample of the English "I Feel Pretty", and it is too cute. I've actually hated every version of that song, until she happened to it. I can't wait to hear all of it.
On a similar off topic note: Kat Nejat, Danielle Polonco(?), and Jennifer Sanchez (all in 'Mi Siento Hermosa') are so underrated! They are incredible.
NityaC, now I'm getting picky, but can you post the full lyrics to the Quintet, please? I'm having a little bit of a hard time decyphering who says what where towards the end, when everyone's singing
Oh...wait, I thought the whole thing WAS there...?
well...I don't speak Spanish, AND they are all singing at once in the end anyway, so I'm not so sure how the overlap will work with typing.
Oddly, I CAN make out the Sharks towards the end, but I know that's only because I recognize their voices and the fact that it doesn't sound Enlgish.
Not sure how this is gonna work. bear with me:
_______________
The Jets are gonna have their day tonight. Luchamos para ser la ley Tonight.
The Puerto Ricans grumble, "fair fight," But if they start a rumble, we'll rumble them right!
Sigue peleándo sÃtecaes Tonight We're gonna cut them down to size tonight.
Dijeron sin cuchillos Ayer, Los Sharks y sus colmillos Los van a corer, tonight
We're gonna rock it tonight, Habrá un ataque tonight We're gonna jazz it up and have us a ball! Será con precisión de forma total.
Their gonna get it tonight! La bronca empieza tonight The more they turn it up the harder they fall. Nos impondremos al momento final
Well they began it!
¡Son los culpables!
And we're the ones to stop it once and for all! Aquà será nuestro momento triunfal, Tonight!
Anita's gonna get her kicks tonight. We'll have a private little mix tonight. He'll walk in hot and tired. So what? Don't matter if he's tired, as long as he's hot!
Tonight, tonight, Won't be just any night. Tonight there will be no morning star! Tonight, tonight! I'll see my love tonight, And for us, stars will stop where they are!
Today, the minutes seem like hours; The hours go so slowly, and still the sky is light. Oh, moon, grow bright, And make this endless day endless night!
I'm countin' on you being there tonight When Deisel wins it fair and square tonight That Puerto Rican punk'll go down And when he's hollered uncle We'll tear up the down
Maria- Tonight, tonight, Won't be just any night. Tonight there will be no morning star! Tonight, tonight! I'll see my love tonight, And for us, stars will stop where they are! Today, the minutes seem like hours; The hours go so slowly, and still the sky is light. Oh, moon, grow bright, And make this endless day endless night!
Riff (Tony) So I can count on you boy? (Alright...) We're gonna have us a ball! (Alright!) Womb to Tomb? (Sperm to Worm!) I'll see you there about eight (Tonight.)
Sharks and Jets- Habrá un ataque tonight!
We're gonna jazz it tonight!
Los venceremos Tonight...
Tonight!
Anita- We're gonna mix it tonight!
Sharks/Jets- Lo empezaron Lo empezaron We'll stop them once and for all! Nos impondremos al final. Será el capÃtulo final
The Jets are gonna have their day! We're gonna rock it De una Guerra sin igal Habrá un ataque tonight! Tonight!
All- Tonight!
____________
Oh WOW, the end is messed up. I'm pretty sure I cut off the Jets somewhere, but I can't find out where. And the...Spanish italics in the beginning are overlapping.
lol, I tried! I don't know if that helps at all. Updated On: 6/15/09 at 04:08 PM
I grew up in a Spanish-speaking household and got a 5 on the AP Spanish exam. While I struggle to speak Spanish (verbs and nerves trip me up) I can understand the language - ask me about the three different versions of El Fantasma de la Opera! But this was pretty tricky in parts. I still had to babelfish some words!
I love how in this production it's perfectly fine to curse in Spanish (along with "cabron" in "A Boy Like That," there's "pendejo" (dick) and "maricon" (queer) in the Prologue - and yet "mother lovin' " and "Krup you" were preserved. I doubt Mr. Sondheim would have opposed f-bomb updates!
Going back to the prologue: While when the Sharks say "polaco" they mean "Pollack," the word is in fact proper Spanish for "Pole" (the nationality, not the Festivus decoration).
And now, behold my translations of Miranda's translations ... thanks to NityaC for providing the Spanish lyrics!
Tonight Quintet
Luchamos para ser la ley, tonight We will fight to be the law tonight
Sigue peleando sitecaes (si te caes?) tonight He's fighting if you fall (?) tonight
Dijeron sin cuchillos ayer, Los Sharks y sus colmillos los van a correr, tonight They said without knives yesterday, The Sharks and their teeth (colmillos=tusks), they're going to run tonight
Habra un ataque tonight Sera con precision de forma total. La bronca empieza tonight Nos impondremos al momento final ¡Son los culpables! Aqui sera nuestro momento triunfal, Tonight. Tonight.
There will be an attack tonight It will be precise, with total formation The quarrel starts tonight We'll impose ourselves in the final moment They are guilty! Our triumphant moment will be here, tonight
Habra un ataque tonight! Los venceremos Tonight, tonight!
There will be an attack tonight We will obliterate them Tonight, tonight!
Lo empezaron (x3) Nos impondremos al final.
They started it (x3) We will impose ourselves on them to the end
Sera el capitulo final De una guerra sin igual Habra un ataque tonight! Tonight!
It will be the final chapter Of an incomparable fight (fight without equal) There will be an attack tonight! Tonight!

Jenna Maroney, I'm a Native Spanish speaker, born and raised in South American and I think that's actually a pretty good translation, there are a couple mistakes here and there, but nothing that hurts the meaning of the lyrics The one part you asked about during "Un Hombre Asi/I Have a Love" is: Hay razon, (there is a reason) Pero en mi corazon (but in my heart) Solo hay pasion, (there's only passion) No hay nada mas, no hay nada mas. (there's nothing more, there's nothing more) Yo se muy bien, (I know very well) Suya soy, (I am his) Yo se quien (I know who) El es hoy (he is today) Yo no tengo control (I have no control) Es mi corazon (he is my heart, or it is my heart, not sure which one)
Also, during the "Quintet" when they sing: "sigue peleando si te caes, tonight" they mean "keep fighting even if you fall, tonight" instead of "he's fighting if you fall." Some little nitpicking about "I Feel Pretty": "graciosa" would be more accurately translated as "graceful" than "cute" "que bonita forma de ser" would translate into "what a beautiful/pretty way of being" "un buen mozo tiene mi amor" = "a handsome guy has my love" "este mal de amor"-tough to translate, "mal de amor" means to be "lovesick" so they're singing "being lovesick is not divine/good" though "to be this badly in love" is a good way to translate. And during "Un Hombre Asi" I do think that the word "cabron" which is an insult in Spanish is closer to something like "F*CKer" in how loaded the word is and the anger behind Anita's word. I also think it's important to point out that when she sings "tu sabes bien que es lo que quiere" she means "you know very well what it is that he wants," she isn't talking about love at all, she very well means that all he wants from her is sex. Thanks for the translation, it's really good
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Muchiiiiiisimas gracias, Ray! It's past my bedtime, so I'll have to go back and fine-tune everything tomorrow. Hopefully this thread will result in a definitive translation of the translation (sin acentos, alas )
I did catch that "mal de amor"=lovesick bit when I was cleaning up that accent-formatting FAIL. Yay!
