Yes, this is something I was told, no I will not cite the source...I am just excited for us west coast folks!! Don't know if it's old news, but....it seems Billy will open in San Francisco in early 2010 for an open run, sit down, production. They are apparently auditioning for the new Billys on Broadway and San Francisco all over the country right now.
Yes, I have not seen this musical you say is so wonderful...but want to! Where is this going to be playing since "Wicked" is at the Orpheum for 2 years?!
I think WICKED initially has a year booked. I still say if they want to clean up the Tenderloin, the best way is to put a LONG RUNNING HUGE HIT into the Golden Gate that will encourage people to invest in that area through new restaurants, and what not.
I don't think the Golden Gate theater can handle the technical requirements of the Billy Elliot stage. It can play there if Billy's room was made as a slide-on set.
Hmm two sit down productions simulatneously is going to create a space crunch, however I doubt Wicked will stay over a year. While SF will bring new blood, the LA production satisfied most of the west coast demand. Also it's a bit soon to be thinking of a sit down for that show, it hasn't exactly won the Tony yet (not sure how long it took before Jersey Boys spawned its sit downs). If they did have to book while Wicked was still in, they'd probably give it the Curran given how close it is to Union Sq. and shaft the touring SHN shows.
Anyway I doubt anything they do will clean up the tenderloin. The nearness of it to goodwill, Glide Memorial, and the unemployment/ SS office will always make it stay a little seedy. Also I don't want it to become the new Times Sq. I live nearby so I like my rent staying low, even if it is at the cost of the BART station reeking of urine.
I was wondering the same thing about the possible space crunch if Wicked is still running with no signs of stopping and Billy Elliot opens up. But which of the two theaters would Billy Elliot fit in? Although If Wicked decides to only run for a year then there probably won't be a problem. Updated On: 1/22/09 at 05:26 PM

Jersey Boys opened on Broadway in November '05 and the first sit-down was in Chicago October '07.
I do think it's early for a site-down (especially on the opposite side of the country), and I doubt many people around here even know that much about Billy Elliot outside of the movie. But hey, anything to revitalize the Tendernob!

Tendernob! Haha I LOVE it! I love how people are calling it Lower Nob Hill. Why not NOMA?
I just thought it was a bit soon to be jumping the gun and starting the casting already since there is a very real possibilty the Billy they cast now will hit puberty. Then again they may be casting younger boys hoping they can groom them specifically for the role over the year.
Believe me, there probably won't be a stage crunch over here, we've had all three theaters vacant for the past three months ever since Spring Awakening came.
Wicked is at the Orpheum, and I think Billy will do great at the Curran! That leaves the Golden Gate theatre free.
Guys, keep in mind that (although it was 20 years ago), The Phantom of the Opera opened in LA a year after Broadway. It ran there for 4 years and moved to San Fransisco immediately afterward for another 5 (I may have the years switched...let me know!). There was obviously no problem there, and that was with two tours running at the same time.
I'm not saying it's definitely there for a year. I am not an affiliate of the production. I am just using history to keep an open mind about the possibilities, and how nothing is definite until it is said to be so.
How to properly use its/it's:
Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...
It could definitely fit into the Golden Gate, they fit in Legally blonde there, and although I know they are different shows technically speaking it would definitely fit. The show would definitely not fit into the curran, WAY too tiny.
If they are doing this, they have got to get a house soon. They were building sets at the Imperial as early as July.

"It's mentioned in the following interview with Stephen Daldry."
It just mentioned it opening in San Francisco...it didn't say anything about it being a sit-down. It could be the launch of the tour...similar to The Color Purple and Mary Poppins in Chicago.
Think the producers of Billy Elliot are confident, to have a sit down in San Francisco as it had better critic reaction than Jersey Boys in New York, the producers can measure how long it has run in London (4 years), that it would de well on a sit down.
What theatre do you have in San Francisco and what are the capacities please?
