A belated message of congratulations for his 80th birthday yesterday.
Hearing his great tunes during childhood was one of the things that turned me on to musical theatre and I've never lost my love for his style of composition. I'm not a musician but to my mind the E-flat, G, B-flat, F chord for "tricked" in It's The Hard-Knock Life is the definitive sound of the 1970s.
If you want to send him a personal message you can do so at
Happy Birthday!!! Thank you for writing the brilliant BRING BACK BIRDIE!
No, in all seriousness, BYE BYE BIRDIE was the first cast recording I ever owned and that score is what made me fall in love with musical theater. Thank you, Charles, for your contribution to the arts...your music will live on forever.
The BBC concert retrospective of Charles Strouse's career that took place in London on Friday can now be heard on BBC i-player (for the next seven days). For lovers of his music this is worth listening to for the overture and entr'act alone. The orchestra is fantastic and conducted by Martin Yates who is also conducting the Carnegie Hall concert next April.
Daniel Boys does a great version of A Lot of Livin' to Do and so does Jacinta Whyte for Another Life. Some of the performances may reinforce certain thoughts on this board about British performers but Mr Strouse is clearly overwhelmed by the whole occasion.
