Has anyone seen the Hairspray National Tour!
It is currently in Toronto for a few days and I saw it last night!
It was absolutly horrible.
The sets were the same from the original but moved by the actors.
There was probably like almost 150 spike marks on the stage floor all different colors. (EXTREMELY distracting)
The sound quality was horrible...
and i've seen lots of shows at the Princess of Wales,
but never with such horrible quality. (the cast sounded very muddy)
The show had added parts and dialogue from the movie which was mainly inappropraite and not funny.
The performers had their moments, but I feel like they were all tired and didn't care to be there. The Tracy was a skinny not so amazing singer.

Did anyone else see the National Tour?!?!

This tour was awesome, it non-equity they can't afford that much and it works with the people moving the set. The Tracy you saw is the understudy, Brooklynn sprained her ankle a few weeks ago. AND the most important THEY DIDN'T ADD DIALOGUE THE MOVIE CUT DIALOGUE.

IT WAS NOT, I SAW THE TOUR BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT. IT IS BASED ON THE ORIGINAL '88 MOVIE.

Edit: QUOTE directlly from the playbill. "Based on the New Line Cinema Film written and directed by John Waters." Updated On: 5/10/08 at 01:05 AM

Alright Relax...
I saw 5 understudies and that is potentially the reason why I was not impressed.
And the fact that I could see crew backstage moving set pieces and not even in blacks and with sound problems and distracting spike tape was also a major distraction.
I must say that Maybelle was fantastic and so was Amber and Edna (understudy)...

Sorry to fly off the handle, but I hate when people say it's based on the new movie. Jerry (Edna) hurt his knee and is recouperating it is a shame you missed him he is very good.

Thats what I heard and I was sooo looking forward to it.
I'm sorry I should have been more clear with the whole movie thing.
I saw Hairspray on broadway and the first national and noticed a difference in the dialogue...
I also would have liked to see Brooklynn Pulver...
and Jarret Mallon....

Well I'm seeing it at the Dallas Music Hall in June. And I expect it to be the SAME damn play I saw on Broadway LAST June. If they change ANYTHING - well, they'll be hearing from me! re: Hairspray National Tour!!!
BUT - I'm SERIOUS!

The dialogue on the national tour is slightly altered from the Broadway production because the tour used to be a 90-minute, no intermission version. When the show was restored to the original two-act format, it was decided to bring the show to 2 hours and 30 minutes as opposed to the original length of 2 hours and 45 minutes, so some of the cut lines and altered scenes remained the way they were in the shortened version. Are you refering to the VEGAS engagement? I would NEVER see that, because I don't see EDITED Broadway shows! EVER!!! (including PHANTOM, which "supposedly" makes up for it with a "better" chandelier crashing. WHATEVER!)
I've NEVER heard that the HAIRSPRAY tour was 90 minutes! I just don't believe that for a second. Word would be out - who would bother.

Believe it or not, Chason2, it existed. When the national tour re-opened as a non-Equity tour at Harrah's Casino in Atlantic City, it was the 90-minute "casino version." Once the tour moved from Atlantic City, it went back to being a full, two-act show, but with about 15 minutes shaved off.

You may have never heard of it, but it's true. Look it up for yourself. Updated On: 5/10/08 at 07:00 AM

Only very few lines are cut, such as Prudy's in 'Without Love."

"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster. "Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."

Is this the only National Tour (I know someone mentioned there's a non-equity, is there an equity?) because I have a friend who said she was just cast as Tracy like a week or two ago. She was in rehearsals for a few days, and then went to Toronto. Maybe you saw her? Her name's Amy Toporek. I'd love to know how she's doing.

I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.

Yes, this is the only national tour. Amy Toporek is filling in for Brooklynn Pulver for eight weeks while she recovers from a broken foot. Her first performance was yesterday (Friday) in Toronto.
