Posted: 4/6/08 at 10:16pmI applaud any actor that goes on when not feeling well. I can only imagine how tough that is. However, I think Patti's ego would not let her go on without the announcement since she knew she was not at her best. I have seen a couple of performers go on with colds and such and no announcement has ever been made. I think a performer needs to trust the audience to be able to tell if someone is coughing or has a sore throat and cannot reach the notes they normally do. It's part of the live theatre experience. Otherwise, we would just go see movies.
The only review of a show that matters is your own.

This is one of the most fickle boards EVER.
Yes, people do have that perception. I don't know where it came from, but it came. I think it was from the 6-show EVITA schedule. I distinctly remember there being a long detailed thread argument about it a while back. Then, NOISES OFF came...I don't know, I can't follow all this stuff. It's petty water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned. But, seriously, I have read people ON THIS BOARD and elsewhere talk about LuPone's reputation for missing shows.
EDIT: I NEED TO LEARN TO TYPE....sorry.

Yeah, well not as dumb as I do. I just spent a good twenty mintues trying to find the thread I'm talking about to no avail. It was about John Lloyd Young and "Jersey Boys", and so naturally LuPone came up.

I give Patti credit for doing the show.
Yet I have to wonder if such an announcement was ever made when Ethel Merman was ill and still performed in "Gypsy." Did she ever miss a performance?

I thimk, despite her reputation, Merman did miss a few shows due to, of all things, vocal troubles. And, I believe that when she returned, songs were lowered to help make the run easier. Somebody, back me up?

It's a catch 22. Calling out would make her look diva-ish, and to announce it would let people, especially industry people, know that her vocals wouldn't be the best, and that she would probably be hacking up a lung a scene or two.
And plus, we're all aware Patti isn't the most humble person in the world.

I just think it was unnecessary. I've performed when I was so sick that I barely made it out of bed, but I didn't feel the need to announce it to the world (until now).
