so I was thinking about this when I was listening to my Angela lansbury Legends of Broadway CD, and it occured to me that we really don't have a new/current/future legend of broadway in the past few years. We have some really great performers, but no angelas, bernadettes, pattis, ethels, carols, chitas, etc
any ideas who would have a Legends of Broadway CD in 10 or 20 years??

Kristen, Idina, Audra, Kelli, Sutton, Ebersole?

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

I was about to post pretty much the same list of names- Chenoweth, McDonald, Menzel, and Foster.

The males are tougher...I would say Nathan Lane and Stokes.

Audra HAS to be included. You can't not include the woman with 4 Tony awards.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I basically agree with the names listed: Sutton, Idina, Kristen, Lea...

I don't think it matters how many tony's you have. These girls are spactacular performers.

As for guys...I agree with Gary Beach, but would like to add Hunter Foster.

Yeah, those Fosters are tallented.

Women: Kristin, Sutton, Audra

Men: Raul, Boyd Gaines, Nathan Lane.

I don't think people like Ebersole, Hunter Foster, Cerveris will stand the test of time.

Broadway people will know who they are.
But legend is probably stretching...

LEA MICHELE?!?!

Jesus.

I was hoping by "Lea," that maybe, just MAYBE, people meant Salonga.

Good point, luvtheemcee, JESUS,if he were to make a Broadway appearance, would certainly become a "legend."

If they can be referenced with one name, they're legends. Ethel, Gwen, Chita, Liza... you get the idea.

This generation, I would be inclined to say Audra, Kristin, Idina (probably less so than others), Sutton, Nathan, Norbert, Raul.

I agree...pronouncing Lea Michele is a bit premature, no? She's originated two roles on Broadway, one of which when she was like 9 and she had nothing at all to do.

I'm not saying she isn't talented, or won't become a legend at some point, but...let's calm down a little bit.

While it's too early to say, Lea Michele has been performing on Broadway since she was a kid. She's still young, but I have no doubt that if she wants to continue doing Broadway after SPRING AWAKENING, she is going to continue to be cast in new shows, and with her history, and with time to grow into new roles, she could go on to be the next great dramatic performer of her generation.

Lea Michele was a replacement in the original LES MISERABLES, and was an original cast member in three Broadway musicals: RAGTIME, the FIDDLER ON THE ROOF revival, and SPRING AWAKENING.

And she's only 21 years old.

If she learns to act. re: Broadway Legends of this Generation???? (future broadway legends)

Okay, I'll play now.

Raul. Not just 'cause I like him. I truly believe he's got what it takes to be a legend some day. And then the usual: Stokes, Audra, Chenoweth. Donna Murphy....
