yeah, the WGA were smart, it would have been foolish to picket the awards ceremony of another Union, especially the MOST well known and recognizable union in the indunstry.

No nominations for Sweeney Todd, but I don't think SAG members got to see it in time to vote.

But Hairspray got one of the Best Ensemble nods!

Leading Actor has some interesting choices.

I'm pretty sure once Sweeney is more widely seen Depp will get an Oscar nom.

Lars And The Real Girl. Really?

I guess I'm surprised "There Will Be Blood" didn't get one of the Best Ensemble nods.

It's been winning several critics awards as the best film of the year.

Does everyone suck in it besides Daniel Day-Lewis?

Nothing would make me happier Besty. I really loved that movie.
Everything is so dark this year, they may really go for the pep and color of Hairspray.

I'm also surprised that Atonement was shut out.

No Amy Adams for "Enchanted" either.

Although I kinda think she's a long shot for an Oscar nomination myself. She's still on the short list of many prediction sites though.

I agree.

The critics awards on the other hand? Very predictable. They're showing their usual narrow-visioned colors, toward the same type of movie, year after year.

Yawn.

They seem to be more in unison this year than in the past... but their choices are SO foreseeable. They lack imagination and emotion. Which is why they aren't the creative folks.

I agree mateo. It's going to be a very interesting year.

Do you guys think the politics of the strike will affect the noms?
Will some people be passed over b/c they perhaps aren't behind the writers vocally enough?

That last part made me laugh, thank you.

"There Will Be Blood" is kind of controversial right now: there are the people who think the film might as well be called "Daniel Day-Lewis is Better Than You", the people who think it's a seriously flawed masterpiece.

Also, even if the film is raved all over the place, is it the kind of movie the Academy goes for?

No, we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't think the strike will affect the voting at all.

Just the show.

"Also, even if the film is raved all over the place, is it the kind of movie the Academy goes for?"

And there you have it, Bustopher. The critics awards don't parallel the Oscar votes.

But the SAG noms are a good indication (minus a few glaring omissions like Sweeney) of what the smaller group of Oscar voters will chose to nominate. I'm guessing 3 out of 5 for most of these categories will wind up with Oscar nominations.

And I'm not worried about Sweeney, either. It wasn't seen by many of the SAG voters in time. That will be taken care of in the next couple of weeks, well in advance of Oscar balloting.

there's been a severe lack of love for Paul Dano in all these pre-cursors, which makes me sad. I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet, but i love paul dano and the role looks really great.

Wow, I can't believe ATONEMENT was totally snubbed out of everything. I thought best cast/best actor/best supporting actress would be a shoo in for them.

I don't even care about Sweeney, but Atonement? WTF?

Happy for UGLY BETTY (3 nods!). Still can't believe the snubs for ATONEMENT & SWEENEY. And Cate Blanchett for Leading Actress? Really? Over Amy Adams?

And, um, 3:10 TO YUMA & HAIRPSRAY for Best Ensemble?
