I was reading BWW today and I saw an article announcing that clips from the movie would be shown on ET and it caught me off guard--I had completely forgotten there was a movie being made. Is it just me or are there not very many posts about the movie?
I know it doesn't come out until next summer, but Sweeney Todd has been talked about ever since the first picture of Johnny as Sweeney was released!
Just wondering. Are people excited for this movie or are more dreading it and pretending it's not happening?

Well, as you said, it does not come out until next summer and Sweeney is right around the corner. I personally will not be thinking about Mamma Mia until it's about to come out, but on the other hand, maybe not even then.
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
I have had 3 chances to see Mamma Mia and I am just not interested. I own some ABBA music and that is enough for me. I was more interested in Hot Feet and saw that.
I'm interested in all movie musicals, of course. However, concerning MAMMA MIA!...I am not a fan of the stage production (although I do love the music). I'm hoping the story has been translated appropriately.
Until SWEENEY has come and gone, I won't be on edge for MAMMA MIA! for a long while...
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I won't lie. I'm a HUGE Mamma Mia fan. Something about the show I like. I saw it on Broadway - my first Broadway show (I was on a trip with my high school), and I was realy into the story. I'm not sure why because it is really cheesy, but it's just some entertaining fluff. I saw it on tour too, and I had to make myself not go see again that same week. It's just mindless entertainment - not high art, but there is obviously something in the show that people like. And when the orchestra starts with that big loud "BAM" at the beginging it just sends chill bumps down my spine.
I'm very excited and can't wait for MAMMA MIA! but SWEENEY TODD opens a week from tomorrow... MM! is months away.
Let's give each movie the attention it deserves individually as it opens

There's some very good points being made here. I agree. Let's focus on Sweeeney and THEN we can concentrate on Mamma Mia

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
MAMMA MIA! is definitely going to be one of next summer's huge hits. The trailer is already out 7 months before the film arrives in movie theaters. All the past movie musicals had their trailers about 2 months before their releases.
This should speak volumes about how Universal Pictures will be mass marketing MAMMA MIA! in the next coming months.
In the words of the great Karen Carpenter: "...we've only just begun".
I'm excited for the Mammia Mia movie now that I've seen the trailer. But sustaining a high level of excitement for 7 months is not an easy feat. Let's dive into this one gradually, folks.
Not counting this thread, there have been 5 separate threads started about the movie this past week alone - I'd say that's a pretty high level of interest for a movie that isn't coming out until July.
The people I know who are interested in theater are FAR more excited about Sweeney than Mamma Mia - regardless of release date. I actually think Mamma Mia's trailer release time sucks - they're just trying to ride the tails of Sweeney (and award season buzz for Hairspray) by releasing the trailer now. How many other movies get full trailers so far in advance - musical or otherwise? If they're not careful, they're going to over-expose the movie long before it's release date. I'm already wondering if the hype now is a sign of low confidence in the movie from the studio...

Doubtful. They probably know that a good portion of the stars in MAMMA MIA aren't huge names in the US so they're spreading word early. Not as early as DREAMGIRLS but not as late as SWEENEY either.
