kevin earley actually sang IF I CAN'T LOVE HER and was phenomonal... i think out of all the performers he had the most lasting impression on me... absolutely found his rendition to be stunning... David Burnham sang OUT THERE... and although i loved him in LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, i found that his voice as way too operatic for this song and it sounded really weird for him to be singing it...
as for the night itself... it was a wonderful evening of music and i loved every second of it... Bruce Vilanch was hlarious and he had the audience laughing their a$$ses of... loved his line "i was a writer yesterday"... haha...
Just got back from the concert and I LOVED it. It was really an excellent concert celebrating the great works of Menken and Schwartz. I enjoyed the performances of everyone involved. Stand outs for me were Kirsten Benton Chandler singing "Somewher That's Green," Alice Ripley singing "West End Avenue," Juliana Hansen singing "A Happy Working Song," Andy Taylor singing "Pink Fish," Bruce Vilanch singing "No Time At All," David Burnham singing "Out There," there were others, but those I can remember right now.
I also got to meet Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz after the concert and they are really wonderful men.
Glad everyone found something to enjoy - it's always an ordeal doing these types of evening - about six hours to do sound and lights is insanity, so there are always things you wish would have run smoother, but this group of performers was/is amazing and it's hard to fail with people like this singing these songs. Just a little correction, Proud Lady didn't end up in the show for reasons beyond our control. Vicki Lewis dropped out of the show on Saturday (TV gig), and at Sunday's band rehearsal, I just happened to ask one of our ensemble gals if she knew I Want To Be A Rockette. She said she'd sung it once a few years ago. I told her if she thought she'd be letter-perfect that I'd take the shot. She promised, I took the shot, and boy did she deliver on a moment's notice. Her name is Marlana Filannino.
Since I've worked with most of these folks many times, I knew they'd be terrific. But, you want to know who I became an immediate and complete fan of and will use whenever I can? Julie Reiber. Wow. I saw her go on as Elphaba a week ago and thought she was brilliant and couldn't even imagine how anyone could be better in the part, and last night she just blew the roof off the theater with The Wizard And I - not just her incredible singing of it, but her acting of it. I felt the same about Emily Rozek and Lion Tamer. But, everyone did a terrific job, IMO, under circumstances that are never easy.
These two work together quite well. I'm looking forward to Enchanted.
I wonder why Menken never decided to work with Schwartz or Rice with more regularity, searching for a lyricist for close to 10 years until he found Glenn Slater.
Some relationships it's quite obvious why they didn't continue, but Rice, and especially Schwartz I think helped give us some of his best material.
Congratulations, BK, on what I hope was a successful evening for you and your organization. It was a delightful evening, with some real highlights (I have to admit I'm becomming a bit addicted to Kevin Earley!)
And, I won one of the auction items, so I was a VERY happy camper at the end of the evening
On a side note, how unbelievably gorgeous was Shirley Jones?!?!?!? She was like royalty.
It was a great evening. And, I was thrilled that The Alex Theatre hosted the event. It's such a wonderful theatre........and, only 5 minutes from my house. Ha, ha....
Lots of fantastic performances - David Burnham, and a few clunkers, too..............it happens. But, overall a great night! Updated On: 11/6/07 at 12:04 PM
wow nealb..it's only 5 mins from my house (or about 10 if I walk) as well. Was supposed to be there for the show last night but my friend was sick and couldn't make it..and didn't want to go by myself.
Glad a good time was had by all..

Cooperross, glad to know that there's another Broadway friend nearby.
Sorry you didn't make the show last night. I went by myself. I get to NYC 3-4 times a year and always go by myself, and see shows by myself. It funny when friends will say, "How can you go by yourself?" As if the show would be different by going with someone? Ha, ha....
The Alex is such a great theatre in Los Angeles. It's too bad that there's no resident company that has stayed there. Before Music Theatre of Southern California went under, they travled to the Alex for a week of shows after the San Gabriel 3 week run ended - making for ultimate 4 week run. In the early 90's Theatre Corp played there....then they went under. And, Theatre League played there, too.....then they pulled out.
I did a few shows at The Alex when MTSC was still around...."Phantom" and "42nd Street." So, it's always exciting to see a show at The Alex.

Wow...she was great. Never would have known she was a last-minute replacement, other than the lack of a title card. Kevin Earley was a highlight for me, too. I'd just seen him a month or so ago at the Chess benefit, and it was great to hear him sing again.
All in all, a fun evening. And a great location, definitely. I'm not quite as local as some of the people here, but I'm in the Valley, so Glendale is always easy to get to.
nealb--I remember all of those attempts to try and get a sitting resident company there for musicals and saw many of them. (Glendale is my hometown..born raised and still live there. Also remeber the days when it was still a movie theatre..good times.)
It's really too bad we don't have one..though I guess MTG is probably the closest with their seasons.

What did you win :) I wss going to bid on the Ruth's Chris/Pig 'n' Whistle dining combo, but couldn't even get through the line at the table. The Sondheim signed musical quote of Not A Day Goes By was the big auction item. All in all, we did very well and I was very pleased - sound was sketchy at times, as was lighting, but that's the nature of the beast.
As to Shirley Jones - wow! Before the show we reminisced like crazy about my days on The Partridge Family (I did several episodes). A funny story - I've known Patrick Cassidy for years, and I mentioned to him at his song rehearsal that I hoped Shirley was coming because I hadn't seen her that much since doing the show. He said, "Doing the show?" I explained to him what I'd played on the show and you could see his face making the connection while he was looking at me. It was really funny.
And Beth Malone - amazing! But everyone did great, I thought. I know some people like some better than others, and for some there will always be clunkers, but funnily one person's clunker can be another's fave and that's what makes horse racing.
So happy you all came out, and I think we'll do it again next year.
