Word "on the street" is they will never get the RODGERS (anything can happen) But the fact that they could not sell out Off-Broadway will make the transfer difficult. Would the Nederlanders really close RENT for this underdog? Several smaller houses have opened up but this has a cast of atleast what 16? and how about the size of the orchestra?
I have a feeling that this either won't end up transferring as planned, or will close shortly after arriving on Broadway (especially if it opens at a theatre as big as the Imperial).
I think that the Imperial was a theatre that the producers of Billy Elliott wanted. There was never an offical word that they got the theatre. I think that the producers saidthat they wanted it and that quickly turned into they got the Imperial theatre.
That being said, I do not think that they will get that theatre due to the fact that it is too big. And, if they close rent for this show it would be a mistake. The producers know that they can make money from Rent. Closing Rent for In the hights is a makstake because they do not know if they will get money from in the heights. They do know that Rent is a money maker.

Yeah there was an official announcement about the Imperial. It's seems strange to me that the theater owners would allow a show to book so far in advance, but I guess they think or hope it will be a HUGE hit.
Winston, Billy Elliot has had the Imperial. Click me!
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I actually have heard yet ANOTHER cirrculating rumor:
RENT will most likely close if the producers cannot make money from having Adam Pascal and the other original cast member in the show.
After that, they most likely will open up the space to In the Heights. *NOTE: The Nederlander Theatre is actually SMALLER than the richard Rogers theatre in seating capacity.
Now, providing In the Heights is a hit, the production should be able to stay there for a good run.
However, if In the Heights is not as well recieved as thought, the nederlanders are in talks with Disney to bring back Beauty & the beast to broadway (with possibly the original Palace set designs) and have Beauty fill the open Nederlander theatre.
Theres no reason why a producer can not book a theatre 18 months in advance. Its very common and also common for that show to open at a differnt theatre from the initial one closer to opening date. The new London musical 'Desperatly Seeking Susan' has been pencilled in at the Guildgud theatre for over a year now. Suddenly 'The Drowsy Chaperone is a huge London flop and the producers swop theatres to the suddenly free Novello Theatre!
A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!''
Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'
What's going into the Gielgud in its place? Do we know? (I may be going to London in early 2008 so I'm keeping tabs)

What's going into the Barrymore? I thought that might be a good theater for them.

RENT is still making money. Its nut is around $250,000, so weve heard, and its still making $300,000+ every week. it doesnt make sense for them to close, and it makes even less sense for the Nederlander to lose the tenant and have to renovate.
I wonder if the Barrymore makes sense, though I still think that Spelling Bee should give it up and they should try In The Heights there.
rumors of it taking the Rogers and Imperial have apparently NOT been made up. but the producers would have to be inSAAAAne to put this show in such an enormous theater.
