This has probably been posted before, but I'll play.
1. The Sound of Music 2. Evita 3. Damn Yankees 4. Moulin Rouge 5. The Producers
The only reason I put Moulin Rouge (which wasn't even a solid stage musical to begin with) is because I thought the Producers was awfully slow. And they took out King of Broadway. WHY?
"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
They took out King of Broadway because Mel felt that all of that would be explained in the next scene where Max and Leo first meet! It's a shame they took it out but o well! It's on the deleted scenes!

1) Moulin Rouge! 2) Oliver! 3) Chicago 4) Mary Poppins 5) West Side Story
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I forgot all about Mary Poppins! And The Producers was the best movie musical EVER! It stayed very true to the stage show!!! In fact....it really was the stage show! I LOVE it. Oh and uh....Nathan Lane?

Oh! And I change Rocky Horror Show and Pajama Game to Once Upon a Mattress (Trcy Ullman version) and Gypsy (Bette Midler version!)

the producers was terrible. and If ANYONE puts Rent on their list I will hunt them downa nd cut off their fingers so they can never post again because they clearly have no business posting if they think Rent anywhere near one of the best movie musicals.
with that said, the first four were easy choices, and the fifth was a fight.
1. Chicago (simply the best) 2. Newsies (christian bale has been amazing his whole life) 3. Evita (Madonna, a solid performance in a movie? Yes, it is possible) 4. Annie (how can you say no to Burnett/Curry/Peters, oh, and of course, little Aileen Quinn) 5. 8 Femme (8 Women, one house, a corpse in the bedroom, everyone has a secret, oh yeah, did i mention it's all in French?)
when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.
1. On the Town 2. The Gay Divorcee 3. Top Hat 4. Guys and Dolls 5. My Sister Eileen
All completely different from their stage manifestations (though I guess Top Hat didn't have one), but great in their own right. And I guess Moulin Rouge gets a special mention for being absolutely insane.
1) CHICAGO- 2002 Oscar Award. 'nuff said. 2) THE PRODUCERS- Can't go wrong with Natahn & Matthew and staying true to the stage show 3) RENT- I liked Rosario and Tracie MUCH better than anyone else in the roles of Mimi and Joanne and Adam and Anthony... Simply wonderful. It is different than the stage show, yes, but it is still amazing. I wish it had done better at the box office. 4) MOULIN ROUGE 5) PHANTOM OF THE OPERA -Only this low because of Gerard Butler

1. Rocky Horror Picture Show 2. Kiss Me Kate 3. Bells Are Ringing 4. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers 5. The Wizard of Oz
"One day, is that enough for you, one day he went dumb, one day I went blind, one day we'll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we shall die, the same day, the same second, is that enough for you? They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more." --Waiting for Godot
I was shocked to scroll down this list and see only a few who list Singin' in the Rain, which is probably the BEST movie musical ever made. My five, in no order would be. . .
Singin' In the Rain Sound of Music West Side Story Oliver (and my current obsession) Reefer Madness
West Side Story. LOVED the music. The Sound of Music- Julie Andrews and the score, marvelous. The Music Man. Eh- The one with Matthew Broderick and KC was wonderful, but I get threats for saying that... Wizard of Oz is wonderful, yes... Annie was my first movie musical. Loved both versions as each has something to offer the other doesn't... Mary Poppins is fun and again Julie Been a while since I have seen Oliver! ... I simply didn't realize we were able to consider those.
I enjoyed the five I listed very much I like them all. I chose those five because- overall- they are my favorites. Maybe because of who is in them, the music, they are more "modern" - I don't know. I love them. And I love the other older ones. But this was to list 5. So I did
I can't win I get ridiculed and threatened for liking the RENT movie- it is amazing and well done... And THE PRODUCERS- what is not to love if you love the stage show?!
I should just keep my mouth shut.
