Overhyped Shows

Crikey - talk about a theatre queen screaming with immaturity in their condemnation of Sondheim. Such sweeping statements "overblown pieces of crap". Fine, you do not like Sondheim. Just learn to accept that some people might do and even if they do not, then people have a right to enjoy who they want without others slagging off and dismissing their interests.

Well said

Wildhorn is crapped all over by many yet others ( my wife & I included ) love his work. I think Sondheim is very talented & love most of what he does but some of it is deadly boring

I also think Schwartz is talented. Loved his scores for Pippin & The Baker's Wife. I also liked his songs in Working but Wicked simply was overhyped for us. We liked it but some people worship at its shrine. I do not see why but if you like it great

I do like ALW and in fact, most theatre composers. Sondheim has grown on me - and is especially great for me if I am in a cerebral mood.

I also rather liked Wicked - despite of the abundance of young teenage girls singing Popular and DG (v badly and embarrasingly) at the interval and afterwards to all who would listen (encouraged by their parents) - yikes, sort of like the bad American Idol rejects. That aside it was an enjoyable, light show.

Phantom. I finally saw it for the first time last month and thought the first act was so slow and draggy.

i liked Cats, but only really the dances and the original idea of the show, some of the musical numbers are a bit bland really (like "the old gumbie cat" or "gus- the theatre cat")

i think Avenue Q is overrated

tell me more, tell me more...how much dough did he spend?

Even though I liked The Producers, it was definatly overhyped when it first opened. Hairspray is another overhyped show. I didn't like it, but I know that there are a lot of fans of it here, so I won't say anything else. Spamalot is another one. Whenever I go anywhere and people find out that I'm a musical theater nerd, they're like, "Ooooo, have you seen Spamalot? Hank Azaria is AMAZING!!!!" Pretty surprising, since out of the four big shows last season, (LITP, DRS, 25APCSB) didn't it get the worst reviews?

There's a lot I am not certain of...

Wicked
Rent

I would say ALW but all of his shows are just plan crap for the most part.

This seems really pointless. I started reading through this thread then noticed by the end every musical ever on broadway was gonna be listed as overhyped.

It depends on if you liked the musical or not whether you think it was overhyped and everyone has different tastes.

Well I think people have totally confused the terms "overhyped" and "overrated". They're not the same thing.

I'm gonna have to agree with the Producers. Although I don't have very good reasoning cause I haven't seen the show, but I saw the movie and wasn't too impressed.

...and I can't believe that we are comparing stephen schwartz to sondheim. I can't even participate because even though I love Wicked and schwartz's other work...all of my respect goes to Mr. Sondheim.

Wicked. Stephen Schwartz has never been a great composer, and this show points up his flaws big time, he hides behind a massive special effects curtain similar to the Wizard who is really just a humbug but puts on a good front.

Don't f*ck with me fellas. This ain't my first time at the rodeo.

I agree with The Producers. I enjoyed it, but it was not the spectacular, best show ever some said it would be.

I can't decide about Wicked. I did love the show and think the music is great, but the hype is just huge. I don't think any show can live up to that much hype.

Wicked AND Rent. I didn't think Wicked was good. I enjoyed Rent but sheesh, the amount of ongoing adoration for both these shows is ridiculous. That's about it. re: Overhyped Shows

I would have to say "Spamalot" and "Wicked" are very overrated!

Never having seen the original movie version of "Spamalot," I didn't get a lot of the jokes. The evening that I saw it, pretty much the entire audience was laughing even before the line was said, having previously seen the film. It's bathroom - frathouse humor, which I don't really care for.

I saw "Wicked." But, it certainly isn't the 2nd coming that everyone thinks it is. The day I saw it, Kristen C was out and I saw her standby. I just didn't think it was all that great.

Odd Couple. The hype had to do with the re-teaming of Lane and Broderick, but the show did NOT live up to the hype!

The Color Purple. It's ok...but not the life altering experience everyone is predicted to have upon seeing it.

Plenty-

Cats
Phantom
Mama Mia
Spamalot
The Producers (It was good, but for Ben Brantley to call Dirty Rotten Scoundrels a lesser Producers is uncalled for. The Producers is a lesser DRS)
