Who do you believe is the greatest female character ever written for a Broadway stage?

Mamma Rose was the first that popped into my head...followed very closely by Mrs. Lovett after I wrote that phrase.

Yes, I'll be unoriginal, too, and say that Mama Rose is a great role.

Elphaba, duh, with Maureen from RENT in close second. Basically any role Idina Menzel played.

I wouldn't say that there is one character who is THE greatest, but there definatly are a few that are great:

Mama Rose
Mrs. Lovett
Margaret Johnson
Fanny Brice
Charity
Roxie Hart
Velma Kelly
Anita
Lola
Effie Melody White
Elphaba (no, I don't think that she's "the greatest", but I think she's one of the better female characters in modern musical theater...)

There's a lot I am not certain of...

I agree, Velma Kelly is an incredible role.

TheaterAddict, it's okay. You don't have to make excuses. Elphaba is clearly the greatest female character in the history of musical theatre (nay, quite possibly in the history of literature as we know it). Every other Greatest Female Character in Theatre list we've had this week has proven the same, and if you look back at the numerous similiar threads from the past month, you'll find they all come to prove that Elphaba is the greatest. While Mama Rose comes close at times with some generous nods to Mrs. Lovett (but only when Patti plays her), Elphaba always wins. I finally feel comfortable enough to admit the truth, which I realize now I have always known but been to scared to recognize. Excuse me while I change my nickname to ElphabaRulz. I hope it isn't taken.

"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!
