I don't like musicals that end not on a climax, I mean like, it just sort of ends. A musical needs a great last number just like it needs a great first number. I don't know which i perfer a Happy ending or a Sad ending...I guess it depends on the show really.
More sad than happy, usually. Not really SAD SAD, but sort of contemplative and reflective. That can also be happy, though. So in short, SERIOUS happy endings, like:
Sunday in the Park With George The Light in the Piazza Nine Hair
"If you are going to do something, do it well. And leave something witchy."-Charlie Manson
I am such a theater queen. I love happy and sad endings. Tune into Henry. Same bat channel. HEE HEE. Mamma, i'm a big shill now. Such a big, big shill. () Updated On: 1/15/06 at 08:31 PM
Pippin's ending needs a serious writing change. I've read about a change made where the young boy sings Corner of the Sky and joins the leading player. That sounds like a good rewrite.
yes i agree chris. Especially since the stry that it was based upon didn't turn out that way. it would have been so nicely heart wrenching if she'd died. too bad it turned out corny.
DRS!!!!!!!!!!! How can you hate that twist? And The Dirty Rotten Number just rocks. It is such a feel good ending, even if they were just screwed for 50 thousand. Oh yeah, I'm listening to the show. Updated On: 1/15/06 at 10:48 PM
I'm sure this has been talked to death, but I don't think it's the fact that Mimi comes back to life at the end of Rent that turns people off from the ending. It's the way in which it's presented -- the "leap of MOOOOOOOO" or the melodramatic hand twitch in the movie -- that makes people, including myself, not care for it.
I like both type of endings. Phantom has a great ending, I guess you could call it sad if you pull for the phantom, but then you see the mask, and you're just like, you sly dog! Miss Saigon has such a sad ending, but it's fitting. I like shows that end big!! CATS (the first show I ever saw, so I have to love it) has one of the best endings, big, loud, entire cast, love it!. Ragtime has a great ending. Urinetown is hilarious, Batboy was cool, my schools theatre department did a production and on opening night, when they reveal who Batboy's parents are, and then he gets murdered there were a lot of Holy S***'s and WTFs yelled out in the theatre. Hairspray ends with great energy, I like that. Into the Woods always has me crying. I actually like the end of Act I in Les Mis better than the end of Act II...and I could keep going...
I want to thank you ALL for such great input for this subject and tonight's theme. I read almost ALL of your posts on the air tonight and gave you all credit for writing them. I hope you guys will consider calling into the show in the future. You all had such incredible ideas and things to say and I know you'd all be a great addition to the show's discussions.
I'll try to read the remainder of the posts that didn't get read tonight at some point next week. Unfortunately some of you posted after we did our last check of this thread and as we reached the end of our broadcast.
Thanks again! And if ANY of you want to discuss your posts on the air - I had a lot of questions I'd love to ask you guys, so let me know and we can have you on during a future show.
Keep well.

ok well this is my cue to defend RENT as usual! =) RENT's ending is fine, but a bad Mimi can ruin in. The effective way is Mimi does NOT MAKE a full instant recovery...on the contrary, she is very week and disorientated when she "wakes up" and the audience is not supposed to think Mimi is going to live forever...but the point of the ending is Mimi had that ONE more moment...for all we know, she dies 10 minutes after the curtain call. Jonathan knew wha the was doing and defended his choice because RENT is about life, not death. Angels death was enough tragedy, and Mimi dying would have TOTALLY gone AGAINST the entire 'no day but today' theme of the show.
So sorry I missed tonights call in, I always seem to be busy on Sunday but I LOVED the couple times I was on air! Henry you are wonderful =)
