Who do you think are some distinct Broadway voices? When you hear them singing you automatically know who it is without being told. Unique voices that stand out above the rest?
- Ethel Merman - Carol Channing - Gwen Verdon - Angela Lansbury - George Hearn - Joel Grey - Patti LuPone - Ann Reinking - Liza - Bernadette Peters - Bea Arthur
It seems to me that if you are successful on Broadway then you have a distinct voice. Not many people want to write a show for performers who are unrecognizable.
I can name so many performers who have a great voice, but sound like the "usual" Broadway voice. This thread is for the the Broadway SINGING voices who stand out above the rest.
As opposed to...speaking voices? I know what the thread meant, I was just pointing out that once a performer is worthy of being recognized, they usually have enough fans who listen to them so often that no matter what they heard they would recognize the voice. Successful performers are recognizable. That is to say, POPULAR performers are recognizable. Also, with so many huge names already mentioned on this "distinct voice" thread I don't how you would define a "usual broadway voice." Seems that the usual broadway voice is the recognizable voice.
I'd say Raul & Adam sound sorta alike, so I wouldn't count them. Anthony also sounds like Adam at times, on different recordings, but he's got the more "unique" voice.
Sutton sounds like a normal Broadway singer, I wouldn't know her from any other person if I just heard her sing some note.
I'd say Cheno has a pretty unique voice, but I dunno if id consider her singing voice unique.
I actually think most performers have a distinct recognizable voice. James Barbour, Marc Kudisch, Raul Esparza, Faith Prince, Michael Cerveris, Sherie Rene Scott, Norbert Leo Butz. Many people have similarities, but I can almost always tell voices apart.

The choosing was not...

What did she realize, Kitten?
That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs.
What's wrong with that?
Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had...
Where?
On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.
I think Audra has a pretty distinct soprano. I don't know whether it is because it is "more operatic" than most, but she doesn't sound like the traditional Broadway soprano.
Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters of course.
