What about Europe? Is going to be released over there because you have to factor in any world wide markets too.

RENT is an artsy type movie?

Europeans have neither heard of nor care about this show or anyone in it. It will get a nominal distribution of theatres over there for a week or two and then be pulled.

Oh, and I just looked on letssingit.com and the #1 requested artist for lyrics is "Rent" and the #1 requested CD is RENT: OBCR Disc 1 and the #3 most requested disc is RENT: OBCR Disc 2.

Oh, sorry Margo forogt Aeon Flux. It'll probably squeeze in at #4 bumping all the rest down one.

so you've talked to every European who gave you that opinion? RENT has payed several tours throughout the majority of Europe if i'm not mistaken, and did considerably well.

Rent did poorly throughout much of Europe, closing up early at several stops.

The point is, the European gross won't be enough to push the film from the flop to the hit category.

>>>You don't think Aeon Flux will even make the top ten????<<<

Also, don't forget Syriana opens in wide release this week, and that's been kicking a$$ in limited, so it'll probably land somewhere in the top 5. Plus, Just Friends has shown surprising staying power with its 37% drop and leapfrogging over Rent, so no way that's going to be outgrossed by Rent. Rent will probably be in the lower reaches of the top 10 this weekend.

It'll probably be out of the 10 by next weekend though, with King Kong and The Family Stone (the latter of which skews female, which is one of the larger segments of the Rent audience) entering, plus any musical media attention will be shifted toward The Producers as it opens in limited.

King Kong is going to stomp them all. That movie is going to be huge. And, it actually looks good!

I always thought would be a tough sell despite being a Broadway hit

It will be on DVD sooner than expected. King Kong does look good & I intend seeing it some Saturday afternoon when there is nothing to do armed with smuggled in soda & candy & popcorn I will buy @ the theater

How much longer do you think RENT will be in theaters?

Why I am sure all of those involved in the movie must be disappointed at some level with the b.o. performance so far, I do not think we can underestimate their seemingly genuine levels of satisfaction with the finished product, the palpable joy they have when around each other (not put on for the cameras), and the opportunity to be the ones to have gotten to do it.

That being said, opening weekend is everything in movies and a middling spot did not bode well. The upcoming big movies all but assure that RENT will get swallowed up. Movies have many additional lives however and I think the combination of DVD sales as well as distribution rights for cable, broadcast television, etc. will help it to make enough money so that it will not be a "flop" in Sony's eyes (and pockets). HOwever, it will never be considered a successful film in business terms.

>>>How much longer do you think RENT will be in theaters?<<<

It'll likely take a huge screen count hit on the weekend of the 23rd as there are tons of movies opening in wide release: Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and Fun with Dick and Jane on the 21st; Memoirs of a Geisha expanding wide on the 23rd; The Ringer, Wolf Creek, Rumor Has It, and Hoodwinked opening wide on the 25th, plus The Producers and Brokeback Mountain doing their first wave of expansion on the 25th as well. Not much room to keep Rent hanging around on a terribly wide scale given its underperformance. So this and next week will be the last two weeks at the current 2000 some odd screen levels (will probably take a little hit this weekend as well, as exhibitors are generally held to the initial wide screen counts for two weeks, then all bets are off after that)

There are 3 things I take into account before calling Rent a 'flop':

1) Rent is a lot longer than the other movies (save for Harry Potter) at over two hours. Less time = less shows a day = less money

2) The movie soundtrack is already a big seller, adding money to the film's revenues in the end

3) The DVD sales of the show will be quite high.

I think Rent will more than make up for its production and advertising costs when all is said and done.

yes, eventually every BOX OFFICE FLOP makes it's money back over time.

i'm sure even A CHORUS LINE: THE MOVIE eventually made it's money back. Updated On: 12/5/05 at 08:43 PM

"Most of the more artsy type of movies rarely are big box office draws."

RENT is an artsy type movie?

Let me clarify. My idea of an artsy movie was basically not a mindless movie solely for box office draw. I consider Rent to be an "artsy" movie, because it didn't have a very big budget, it didn't have a big name cast, it dealt with several sensitive social issues, and it did expect some kind of awards buzz.

That's why I say that those who are simply looking at $$$ is completely missing the point. Ever since they decided on using the OBC in the movie (and I'm so happy that they did!), we knew that the quality of the movie was much more important for the producers than the usual Hollywood tactic.

The buzz is what's important (even though box office gains would be nice too) and I believe that they certainly achieved it. Look at the soundtrack sales, look at the increased ticket sales in Broadway, look at the number of my (and I'm sure others') newbie friends who loved the movie so much that they're listening to the soundtrack 24/7 now. I go to other discussion boards, and never have we gone off-topic to discuss a movie before, but we did for Rent.

Even if you do consider Rent a flop, there's a difference between a flop like Rent that was able to reach out to people, and a flop like From Justin to Kelly.

Point taken, but they were obviously thinking this would be a commercial breakthrough considering all the promotional muscle behind it. Ah well.

Hate to tell you. Rent did poorly in Europe and I believe the London production as well as a seconday European tour closed early.

Before the film opened, SO many people were bashing it all over the internet. That probably didn't help sales, also, I haven't heard any real reviews of the film since it opened.

as much as i hate to say it (and I can only speak for the UK and not all of Europe) but rent is not particularly well known here. it's not currently in the west end and hasn't been for some time, and there haven't been any touring productions, that I've heard of, for several years..... i live in scotland and the last one here was in 2000/01.
all that said, if publicity is good... who knows!!! i hope it does really well and i can't wait to see it..... it comes out here in february

I suppose that since only approximately 3% of the US population attends live theatre, and only a fraction of them are true RENT fans, that going to see the movie multiple times isn't making as much of a dent as hoped for.

I find this utterly depressing to be quite frank. I feel like we've let them all down. If we could manage to give the movie 5 million on opening day, why couldn't we continue something close? I've been enough times to count on both hands now, have paid for others to go, am doing so again this week and thank goodness I got a bonus this week or the gas bill would have to wait. I'm a single mom here, no real money.

I understand that some people didn't like the movie, and I didn't love all of the directoral decisions, but it is still worth supporting. This wasn't some Hollywood sham with glitzy names and no soul. Those are OUR guys up there, trying to tell this story within the unfortunate confines and at the mercy of, the director and his editor (I don't hate Chris but yeah, he definitely could have used some outside input; and Adam should have sung his a** off instead of holding back). It would be quite nice if people would remember the support factor and just go buy a ticket, even if you didn't love everything about the movie, even if you choose to not actually see it again.

I am happy the movie was made, that so many originals are there, that the newbies were great and that I enjoyed it. I'm excited about The Producers, it will be good BUT, it's fluff. It doesn't have the heart that so touched me with RENT. The play, the movie and music are just on another level with me, one that can never be touched or replicated. I simply cannot imagine ever feeling again this involved and holding so dearly to my heart the energy, spirit and life changing messages associated with RENT.
