I was just thinking how AMAZING Sutton Foster would be in Funny Girl. What do you think? She was awesome in the benefit concert!!! And she definitely has the comedic sense for the role.... I think she would be phenominal. that would be awesome!!!!
I believe Sutton has gone on record as saying that she isn't interested in doing revivals at this stage of her career.
I agree that she'd be good, but as much as I love Sutton I agree with the thoughts that Stephanie J. Blook would be phenominal and the best choice.

Yes, "The Drowsy Chaperone" is wonderful. As soon as I get back in to LA and get settled back in from vacation, I am going to spend some time getting caught up on that Spoiler thread.
broadwayman---I happen to agree with you--I think Sutton would be fabulous as Fanny Brice---Her comedic skills, timing and voice are perfect. (I haven't seen Stephanie Block perform, so I can't compare)
Stephanie isn't exactly from the shtetl either... but she fits the part of Fanny better (not the real Fanny... Streisand herself was nothing like the real Fanny), and I can see Stephanie adding in enough of the "lower east side" flavor. For Sutton, it would be like a bad-fitting shoe.
Stephanie would truly shine in this part. My first choice, as well.

When FUNNY GIRL was still in the planning stages, the role was offered to Carol Burnett who famously noted "You really need a Jewish girl for this." Carol is STILL right.
Actually, what I'd love to see Sutton do (and if DROWSY comes to Broadway, I don't know if she could manage it) is to play Louise in Patti Lupone's Ravinia GYPSY.
Yes, I've seen Fanny Brice. She was under contact to MGM for a while and appeared in many films there.
HOWEVER... this is a musical called Funny Girl, with a character named Fanny Brice. It's not an impersonation show. Streisand was criticized in the original run for being nothing like the real Fanny.
For that matter, if you want a "real" Annie Oakley in Annie Get You Gun, you'd better cast Kathy Bates... who looks more like Annie than anyone who's actually played the part. (Actually, Ernest Borgnine is a dead ringer.)
Same thing with Gypsy. The leads don't look or act anything like the real people.
The point is, this is a theatrical interpretation of their life, not a Tussaud recreation.

Not a recreation, okay - though in this specific show, so much emphasis is put on Fanny's looks, so you can't really compare it to Gypsy. She has to at least look Jewish...And be able to sing "If A Girl Isn't Pretty" and mean it. I love Sutton to death, but she is not right for this role.
"Years from now, when you talk about this - And you will - Be kind. "
Again, I saw Sutton in "Little Women" and was just totally unimpressed. Everyone raves about her, so I was really looking forward to seeing something amazing. I walked out saying, "THAT'S what everyone is talking about???!!!" Maybe it was the show, maybe she was just in a blah mood because it was closing the next night. Despite all that, she's just ALL kinds of wrong for Fanny Brice. I'd see Shoshana Bean in that role before her...
It's really hard to take this board seriously sometime. HA But you guys are entertaining... can't wait to see what threads you come up with next! Updated On: 12/10/05 at 04:59 PM
Sutton is very vanilla American girl. She would sing the score quite well, yes. I've never heard a better "I'm the Greatest Star" than her's at the benefit concert a few years back. But all in all, she's not the right gal for the show.
Sutton Foster would be wonderful in this show, however at this stage in her career I doubt it could happen. If this show is revived it will be one hell of an expensive show to produce and in this day and age that means you need a NAME to put above that marquee to get people in and get your money back. While Foster might be known in the theatre community, and yes the name of the show is also quite recognizable, it still wouldn't be enough to guarantee a hit.
