As a former New Yorker, and a current resident of Las Vegas, I can safely say that Las Vegas is NOT the new Broadway. Although the shows, at best, are entertaining, most do not compare to the likes of the vast majority of the works in New York. With the exception of Cirque's newest show KA' (a $150 million production) much to see in Vegas is quite fluff and adult entertainment.
Avenue Q will be premiering at the WYNN as of September. I will try and get a picture of the billboard for all of you.
This will actually be the whole show in its entirety.
Phantom will be 90 minute production (Harold Prince at the helm) and is sure to be a sight to see. With a gondola inside of the theatre/stage.
Hairspray; again another 90 minute production for the "casino" crowds.
We Will Rock You; no comment. (I have not seen it)
Mamma Mia! quite easily the "C" list version of the broadway production. Fluff, but fun!

Posted: 4/25/05 at 6:07pmThe Las Vegas production of MAMMA MIA! is certainly not "C" list; it's quite top notch. And, if you're a rock musical/QUEEN fan, WE WILL ROCK YOU ranks right up there. Very talented cast.

Posted: 4/25/05 at 7:19pmI'll agree Phantom that the cast of We Will Rock You is extremely talented but the show as a whole really lacks. I had a friend who saw both the tour of Mamma Mia and the Vegas version and loved the Vegas show much more. I'm excited to see Ave Q there because I don't get to NYC enough.

Theatre stars have performed in Las Vegas as well - Michael Crawford sang there for a number of years.
Even TONY winner and host Hugh Jackman is opening his world concert tour at Las Vegas ( this weekend) - to inaugurate the WYNNLasVegas.
It is good to know that Las Vegas is changing its reputation to one that is more entertainment-oriented, Broadway plays included.

A fellow Las Vegan, I couldn't be more excited for these shows to come here. I applaud the fact that they are streamlining them for Las Vegas - they obviously know their audience. I have long wanted to try to get work on the strip, but I'm a musical theatre baby, not a showgirl, so I am thrilled to audition for real broadway right here. The talented performers of Las Vegas deserve to get PAID for their efforts instead of puttin around in the smattering of community theatres here. HAIRSPRAY here I come!
And I thought Mamma Mia was a great production. Can't compare it to NY, but I can't imagine anyone could beat Tina!

Posted: 4/25/05 at 8:12pmAgreed. I am very happy to have Broadway shows in Las Vegas. I was used to my 10 blocks of theatre in NY, but welcome these shows with open arms. It beats many of the other "entertainment" provided to us out here...
