Has there been any lyric from any musical that has always stayed with you, or touched you or that you just seem to find amazing in any kind of way? If so, which one(s)?
really, tho, one of my favorites recently is from HAIRSPRAY, a show that I didnt care for all that much (flame away), but the lyric has me laughing every time I hear it.....
I'LL EAT SOME BREAKFAST THEN CHANGE THE WORLD.
So optimistic & sincere & deluded--i love it!!!
"I'll eat some breakfast then change the world."
"I hate you, and I hate your ass face!"
One song in Company that I have always loved because of the lyrics is "Sorry, Grateful". The entire song captures the feeling of ambivilence in a relationship but, there is one line in particular that strikes me and I have always loved
"You fear she's starting to slip away and scared she'll stay".
"On My Own" has always been my favorite song--the lyrics are just gorgeous. And lately "Unusual Way" has really touched me. But the lyrics that have probably made the biggest impression on my are from RENT. "Look I find some of what you teach suspect because I'm used to relying on intellect, but I try to open up to what I don't know. Because reason says I should've died three years ago." Don't know why, but it stuck with me.
"You're the worst thing to happen to musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber!" --Family Guy
"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.
Kitzy's Avatar du Jour: Kitzy as Little Red Ridinghood in her college's production of "Into the Woods"
I've also always loved Unexpected Song and thought the lyrics to it were beautiful, even though a bit sappy and corny. I especially love the line "this is not like me at all, for once I'm lost for words, your smile has really thrown me". I really identify with taht line.
I want to have this song be the one I first dance to at my wedding.
LOVE WITHOUT REASON LOVE WITHOUT MERCY LOVE WITHOUT PRIDE OR SHAME LOVE UNCONCERNED WITH BEING RETURNED NO WISDOM, NO JUDGMENT, NO CAUTION, NO BLAME
............
NOT PRETTY OR SAFE OR EASY, BUT MORE THAN I EVER KNEW LOVE WITHIN REASON - THAT ISN'T LOVE
(Stephen Sondheim, "Passion")
Other than that almost anything by Sondheim or William Finn - both of whom write lyrics at a level mere mortals can only dream of.
THEATRE 2020: CURTAINS**** LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS***** WICKED***** KEITH RAMSAY TAKING NOTES WITH EDWARD SECKERSON***** KAYLEIGH MCKNIGHT CONCERT***** RAGS***** ON MCQUILLAN'S HILL** DEAR EVAN HANSEN***** THE JURY***
another sondheim: "Pardon me is everybody here, because if everybody's here I want to thank you all for coming to the wedding, I'd appreciate you going even more...."
From Company
That song is so funny to me and it can occupy my brain completely. At my Uncle's funeral many years ago, the only way I could keep myself from completely losing it was to utter those lyrics over and over again.
"princes wait there in the world its true. princes, yes but wolves and humans too, stay with me..."
soooooo good so true and for some reason that lyric always sticks with me.
""the gays love their presents. just wave something shiny in front of their faces, you can get whatever you want. Thats how we got manhattan from the gay indians" -Karen (W&G)"
I have to say I loved some of the lyrics in Wicked. Ones especially from I'm Not That Girl, Defying Gravity, and For Good. Lyric wise I also love Not For the Life of Me (Millie), Unexpected Song (Song and Dance), One Day More (Les Miz) among others!
*Don't dream too far, don't lose sight of who you are*
LOVE THE MIDGET THE STRIPPER WAYNE THE SNAKE -The Last 5 Years
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SQUEEZE YOUR LITTLE FINGER EASE YOUR LITTLE FINGER BACK YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD WHATEVER ELSE IS TRUE YOU TRUST YOUR LITTLE FINGER JUST A SINGLE LITTLE FINGER CAN CHANGE THE WORLD -Assassins
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"
"...When did your sparkle turn to fire And your warmth become desire? Oh, what miracle has made you the way you are?" ---GIGI from Gigi (Lerner/Loewe)
"...She'll grow older By the hour And be hopelessly shattered By Saturday night." ---A WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY from A Little Night Music (Sondheim)
"...It happens very softly With no apparent cause The little imperfections No longer give you pause. The traits you thought peculiar You managed to acquire And what you didn't understand You gradually desire..." ---IT HAPPENS VERY SOFTLY from Nefertiti (Spangler/Gore)
"Tea for two And two for tea And me for you And you for me Can't you see How happy We will be?"
and so on for the entire song--perfectly direct and simple.
"This is how Sampson was shorn, Each in her style a Delilah reborn..."
Perfect inner rhyme
The Man That Got Away: It wasn't until I saw the lyric written out that I realized this song had verses and a real rhyme scheme. Its terrifically subtle in the writing.
And to reiterate: "Wear you hair down And a flower. Don't use make-up. Dress in white. She'll grow older By the hour, And be hopelessly shattered By Saturday night."
"If my life weren't funny, it would just be true. And that would be unacceptable."
--Carrie Fisher
"Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world! Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before! Let your soul Take you where you long to be! Only then can you belong to me . . .
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication! Touch me, trust me savour each sensation! Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in to the power of the music that I write -the power of the music of the night . . ." Basically I love "Music of the Night"!!
I also love this POTO song, it's always stuck in my head! "Wishing you were somehow here again . . .knowing we must say goodbye . . .Try to forgive . . .teach me to live . . .give me the strength to try . . ."
"Life will be frozen peaches and cream.
Baby, dream Your Dream" ~ SC
The lyrics to "Defying Gravity" are absolutely magnificently written, and almost everyone can relate. The ones written above and wonderful as well as: "Something has changed within me; Something is not the same. I'm sick of playing by the rules of someone else's game."
If driving fast cars you like, If low bars you like, If old hymns you like, If bare limbs you like, If Mae West you like, Or me undressed you like, Why, nobody will oppose. When ev'ry night the set that's smart is in- Truding in nudist parties in Studios. Anything goes.
