I have a friend down @ hollywood who is a producer. He has informed me taht because of the great succes of "Chicago" They are planning on creating new movie muscials. They PLan to adapt stage shows for the big screen. And to update some of the older movie musicals..some shows in the planning are:

*Oklahoma!
*My Fair Lady
*Babes in Toyland
*Wizard of oz (great discussion over this)
* Grease (maybe)

Let me know what you guys think...should Wizard of oz be re-made..with brand new state-of-the-art Special effects? or should it be left alone? Updated On: 9/28/03 at 03:28 PM

The Wizard of Oz should be left alone. It's a classic, and we already have The Wiz.

This list sounds pretty flimsy. I believe there are musicals that will be made before these mentioned. The GREASE rumor is actually a second sequel. And as for WIZARD, I doubt they would remake it unless it was based on the other Baum books and it had nothing to do with the classic MGM version.

There was talk of a hip-hop retalling of the Oz tale, presumable retitled "The O.Z., that was in development a couple of years ago. I haven't heard any thing about it recently though. It was apparently a made of TV type deal.

There was also talk of a television remake of The Wiz in the works, which, I HOPE, they decided to do. I am not a fan of teh film and I love the stage version. The film was just an abomination of s good theatre experience. If they DO do it, I say bring back Stephanie Mills as either Aunt Em or Glinda. But if she EVER plays Dorothy again.. so help me I will scream. I saw her on a tour in the 90s. A meopausal Dorothy does NOT work. that was one of the MANY MANY MANY faults of teh film version.

MOvie musicals should die..they completely take away the maguc that u get from seeing a live show.

I think a remake of The Wizard Of Oz might be very interesting. But why would they ever want to remake My Fair Lady? The movie of that musical is perfect.

I think we've had this subject brought up before as well. Be that as it may, I am of two minds regarding this>

1) NOTHING can take away from a live show. Even if you see the same show 100 times, no two will be exactly alike. One night may be an "on" night and another not. You never know.

2) On the other hand, when a show is over and closed, no one will ever see it again. I know all about the copy they make and throw in a vault someplace but that's not available to everyone.

I don't care if you do hate him, it is a ROYAL shame that Mr. Crawfords performance as the Phantom is lost to us that never had the chance to see him. It will never come again. I would have LOVED to have seen him do it live but would settle for a taped (legal) copy if I had to.

So far as "Oz" is concerened. How can they hope to top the original? No, they should NOT do a remake. IMHO.

My Fair Lady would be interesting. Jessica Simpson as Eliza, Nick Lachey as Freddy, Sean Connery as Professor Higgins. Oh yes I can see it now...

The Wizard of Oz NO! NO! NO! Yes, turn Wicked into a mini-series or movie musical, but DO NOT TOUCH MY WIZARD OF OZ!

Grease? wtf? Let go of it. It was a bad movie, bad musical, bad concept.

None of these. Something else maybe, but none of the ones mentioned.

There have already been talks concerning the following:

Mame
Fiddler on the Roof
Guys & Dolls
Hello Dolly
La Cage aux Folles

I think these will be the next ones to hit the screen.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

LES MISERABLES has had a number of film versions -- but not one of the musical.

It would make a great musical epic on the screen!

Since production has already started on POTO I have a feeling it will be the first to "hit the screen." Now the question is what will the Phan Phans hit the screen with once they see it?

Also, Sondheim confirmed to a friend that SWEENEY will be filmed. No other details, but from Steve's mouth to Weinstein's pocketbook!

I'm not at all convinced in this supposed rush for more movie musicals. We'll see a few more...PHANTON & SWEENEY. But I don't see many more moving beyond the 'talk' stage.

I think CHICAGO may well turn out to have been a fluke hit.

I remember reading in an early WICKED article that Universal Studios, (the primary backer of the musical), has already optioned or was in the process of optioning WICKED for a movie-musical. Kristin stated that she hoped that the integrity of the musical would carry over by using much of the original talent in the cast. She said that if she ever got a call to come and be Nicole Kidman's Glinda singing voice that we would find her hanging herself with her shower curtain. Hee hee hee...

Kristin should be more concerned about whether she'll have a job after opening night.

Wicked would make an amazing miniseries, let me say right now. I would LOVE to see that done.
Also, The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies in the world and I have collectibles all around my room, but I am all for a remake. It would be interesting to see what they do with it. If it's bad, who cares? Your opinion is only your opinion. You still have the original version of "The Wizard Of Oz". As for the rest of the ideas mentioned, I would love to see a Les Miz movie.

I agree that the experience of a live show is incredible and cannot be replaced. However, much more can be done with film than with theatre. The soundstage/studio/on-location filming opens up many doors that are locked on the Broadway stage. Things can also be done so that they are JUST the way the director envisions. Theatre and Film are two different and equally respectable worlds...

They desperately NEED to make Les Miz into a movie. Every movie version of it now is horrid. If nly they could make TMM into a new movie with Sutton, the old movie is really pathetic in comparison to the stage show. And I would not be surprised at all if Wicked was turned in to a feature film. Mini-series, no thanks. Orginally the novel was to be made into a feature film, but they went with the concept of a musical instead. I'm hoping the musical is turned into a feature film.

i agree about the wizard of oz idea.....there are just some things that are better left alone.

o/t
i'm still kind of uneasy that they are remaking charlie and the chocolate factory. no one could play that part like gene wilder and unless they REALLY go all out, people will be disappointed. for example, the room with all the candy in it, i mean in the original it was amazing, they would have to do something really huge to even get me in the theater.

I could see an adaption of 'OZ' that stayed truer to teh novel.. ther is A LOT of good stuff that went untapped for the MGM film, but not a remake of the musical.

I think they should leave Wizard of OZ and Grease alone. Who can outdo Judy Garland and John Travolta?? Sometimes there are just too many remakes of something already good. Why not come up with something new?

The need to make a musical version of MAME with the one and only CHER.

If you think she could not do it then you need to check out TEA WITH MOUSILINI. Cher was fabulous in that. And would be great as MAME.

Why on Earth would they make movies that anyone can seem respectably performed at their local public high school?

The Wizard of Oz, Grease and My Fair Lady should not be redone they are classics and have been overdrawn with the exception of My Fair Lady which does not even belong in this classification. no one did it better than Audrey & Julie.

Another idea that Disney could have fun with I think is Into the Woods Movie? Just an Idea I think Sutton would be a great Cinderella.
