Your Favourite Gypsy? |
Angie, big time...judging only by the recording, however. the only one i've seen live is Bern, plus the Bette & Roz film versions.

"I hate you, and I hate your ass face!"
Not having had the good fortune to see such greats as Merman and Lansbury on the stage, I will say that I have all the recordings and that Angela's is absolutely my favorite. This wonderful, layered performance just shines through in every song.

Angie's recording??? Really?
I mean...she sounds a little...well...posh.
PLUS she doesn't sing it in the original keys. AT ALL. I'm not saying that's a bad thing (I fully plan on using her orchestrations when I play the role), I was just surprised.

Actually, I saw Betty Buckley's Mama Rose in Arizona and she was pretty damned amazing. Miscast, yes, but amazing.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
My favorite recording is Tyne Daly, actually. It wasn't blaringly over the top like Merman, but still had an edge. I can't stand listening to the Lansbury recording, not because of her, but everyone else. The American accents are just awful.
PS - None of these women played Gypsy, they all played Mama Rose.

I agree with Robbie. It was quite shocking to hear how low her big numbers were. And Lansbury sounded TOO happy singing every song. And she had an annoying British accent that kept coming up every other word or so. Mama Rose is NOT British. However, I do prefer her over Merman, that's for sure. I would have to say my favorite Gypsy is the Tyne Daly production, with Bernadette Peters' production tied, or in a VERY close second.

I really liked Tyne a lot and her understudy Jana Robbins.

Well i saw Tyne Daly and she was wretched.
I prefer Bernadette. I saw clips of Merman and although she was incredible BERNADETTE moved me.
Bernadette made the role hers. She was sexy, seductive and she made me feel for Rose. I saw her in Into The Woods and Sunday In The Park With George and although everyone loved her in those i preferred her in Gypsy.
I really was moved by her Rose's Turn the woman got me to cry and that takes a lot.

I concur with Mister Matt, this thread should be entitled "Who's your Favorite Mama Rose?"
I've seen Lansbury in London and on Bwy (about 10 times), Daley and Lavin. Of the three, Lansbury was the most magnificent.

Mine will always be Angela !!
"Even if I could let you see me cry you would never understand what I was feeling inside, you see it and use it but dont believe in it..."
Everytime I hear Tyne sing as Mama Rose, I want to run to the hills in anguish.
You've gotta have heart AND music

My favorite is Tyne. And I am not talking about the recording. I am talking about what was on that stage. I was so moved by her performance I saw it 3 times. Lansbury will always have a special place in my heart. But I am too young to remeber her performance in detail. Bernadettes in my opinion is my least favorite. On stage she is a train wreck and the recording is unbearable. ( Just my opinion folks)

Magruder,
And every time theres a discusion I will make it known again. You have a problem with that? Then it is your problem. I believe there are numerous people on this thread that have also stated their opinion before. Just because mine doesn't go with the popular ( on this board) flow; doesn't mean I need to not participate in the discussions. I always respect everyone elses opinion.
