I am not pleased with her breath placement nor her enunciation of her vowels. They are neither nice or round in tone.  Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID live-action movie musical - News & Discussion Thread

Trying to do 5-minute long riffs underwater is dangerous for everyone. Especially for the ones that have to listen to it.

Who’s doing five minute long riffs underwater?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a live action Little Mermaid a few years ago?  I could have sworn I watched it on TV, but can't seem to find anything online.  Thanks!

There was a Little Mermaid Live on ABC which showed the animated film and live performances of the musical numbers.

Sierra Boggess posted this this morning.

Oh, I finally found the leak of most of the song again (but it's gone now). So, yeah, when she sang "aaaand" all big and "aggresive" it sounded to me like she was aggresively, excitedly getting to the next thing she really, really wants - to know what the people know. I just love her rendition.

But the aggressive misplaced "and" is not in the line "to know what the people know". It is in the line: fire and burn. It really does not make sense there. A meaningless word can not randomly given such extreme emphasis. If anything, other words in that line should have the emphasis. That is just disconnect and random posing and indulgence.

You are not the studio, a producer, or the director. Your opinion on a line reading does not matter, and nobody cares about what makes sense to you or not, especially when you are being intentionally ignorant about it. Move on. Creative decisions were made.

Yes, we get it. There’s a kid’s film coming out that you don’t like. Jesus, build a bridge.

If the film is a huge success, do you think Disney will revive it on Broadway?

The score is just so wonderful. I would love to see this show get the production it deserves.

I would love to see a new stage production as well. At the very least I would love a cast album featuring the revised score. The licensed version is now very different from the Broadway cast recording.

Give this to Timbers. Let him work his magic on it for Broadway.

Seb28, I re-listened to it, and I don't know what you're talking about. She sings "ready to staaaaand. AAAAAAND ready to know..." So I thought that was the aggresive "and" you meant. Her "and" in "fire and why' doesn't sound aggresive or have misplaced emphasis at all. I just don't get it. I like all she does with the song, I really do. Even if she did get aggresive with "fire AND why", I would like that, too, because she is starting to get sick of not being able to be part of that world, so she's getting aggresive, even with that word.

Let's just agree to disagree and that we have different opinions. I don't like an aggressive Ariel. I like classy longing, not trashy longing (for the lack of a better word, I find aggressiveness is lacking class per definition). The ad-libs and riffs come across as posing and indulgence to me, but might come across as sincere to you. Maybe in 100 years 99% of the people find screaming and riffing sincere and beautiful, where in the 1950's it would have been not even 1%. Now, in 2022 we seem to be in a place where 80% finds it jarring and 20% loves it very, very much. In 20 years it might be 50/50. Who knows. Time will tell.

The original Broadway show was a failure. I don't think they're going to bring it back. Alex Timbers would be an inspired choice though. You need someone highly creative who isn't afraid to push boundaries for Mermaid. It's a very hard show to stage.

Seb28, it seems like a lot of your complaints have to do with how she was coached to sing the song. Some of what you claim are wrong notes are notes that are written in the music but not sung accurately by Jodi Benson. The music team also seemed to want her to punch the triplet rhythms throughout, something Jodi Benson also didn’t consistently do. This is what makes it sound “aggressive” to you (a word I think we should be careful about using in this instance). I found none of this interpretation jarring, and in fact, I thought it was much more lyrical than how I expected Halle to sing it. I felt every ornament was earned and intentional. None of it sounded like “we have an R&B singer, let’s make it more modern,” it just sounded like what Halle’s version of Ariel sings like.

I just want everyone to know that Seb28 is the same oddball who has posted under a dozen different names and in the past has suggested that it would be ok to paint a white child black and put them in The Lion King. He seems to have a real problem with the way POC interpret songs and obsesses over the way individual words are sung.

Yes. All of their arguments are rooted in racism and it's deeply disturbing.

This is not true, the "but who cares" line is played instrumentally multiple times in the movie and is always the same and is sung correctly by Benson and not correctly by Bailey. The second line "No big deal", has a variation instrumentally but is sung in the same way by both Benson and Bailey. If anything, Bailey could have chosen the variation on the second line. Not on the first. That is just not musically correct. I also think that the team gives the singers too much freedom nowadays and that the atmosphere behind the scenes is much too "popular". When you see what Cynthia Erivo got away with in Pinocchio it seems that there is no music team at all. At least not a team that opens its mouth.

Can you please stop your racist remarks right now? I am half POC.

I have been cheering for Bailey's casting for months. This is about movie details and artistic choices in singing that I do not like.

Can you please look past race? That is where equality starts. Thank you.

Whether what people say about you is true or not your endless opinions about the movie are borderline creepy, this is a children’s film aimed at children. Some of your comments have cut pretty close to the line of racism, your eagerness to explain how the endless riffing or sassiness is not to your taste, when there’s nothing of either in the performance, gives off the impression her blackness is the issue, despite her blackness not being part of the performance you’re intensely critiquing.
