I know it is hard to believe, but we are quickly approaching July 2021. At that time, we will have just over a month until the first post-pandemic B'way play (re)opening, and two for the first musical. And as we all know, the large slew of (re)openings will continue throughout the calendar year and the 2021-22 season.

A lot of these openings/preview periods will be happening very soon - sooner than we all may think. This being said, I wonder when we will start seeing casting/crew announcements, as well as ad campaigns on a larger scale. I've seen a few TV spots so far (especially the morning of that big GMA announcement last month), but these productions are going to need a lot more press to keep them afloat.

Oh look, a bibu!

Every show is in their own unique position when it comes to casting upon return and how that impacts when ad campaigns can or cannot begin.

For example, if Show X uses people in their ads that aren't with the show anymore, they might have to create completely new art with the new cast member(s), who may or may not be cast, and who may or may not be able to be photographed, filmed, etc. until a certain date due to about a thousand factors. And then it takes time to make all those ads, not to mention every Broadway ad agency has had the majority of their staff furloughed more than a year so there need to be enough people to make said ads.

Show Y might be in the same position but could come up with a completely new way of doing things that doesn't require talent to be involved.

Show Z might be ready to go in terms of art, but might not be ready to spend the money on large ad campaigns yet.

Things will likely pick up after the July 4th holiday in terms of advertising, but advertising and press are not one in the same, so casting announcements (aka press) will happen whenever the various press teams think is right for their particular show.

Most shows are waiting to see how much (if anything) they receive from SVOG. Until that’s known, no one is spending any more money.
