Did you cover 1998 yet? This site's malfunctioning on my laptop so I can't read most of the posts, but for 1998 I would offer 'Ragtime', winner of both best score and best book. A far superior show to 'Lion King'.
While I’m sure a lot of you theater buffs did your best to find a substitute for this year’s Tony Awards which were suppose to take place last night, I’ve got something for you all. Today, we’ll be taking a look back at what ended up being a hotly contested race from 2004 as well as a deep dive into all 5 nominees from that year.

Today, we’ll be taking a look back at what ended up being a very competitive Tony Awards race from 2015 as well as a deep dive into all 5 nominees from that year.
50 years ago tonight marked the opening of a new Broadway musical by James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim with a production that was directed by Hal Prince (who also produced) and Michael Bennett (who also choreographed). Today, we'll be looking back at this very show as well as its success at the Tonys.
Thant was fun and informative to read, thanks for sharing. Embarassed to say despite seeing/hearing dozens of references to Follies in recent years, I couldn’t have told you what it was about or who wrote/directed. *ducks*
It could’ve used some proofreading just in case you didn’t realize some language errors and prefer to fix!
Some excellent points as always. I think another major thing to bring up, though, is that the Tonys had overlooked Hair several years prior and had just rewarded a Sondheim musical the year before. So in many ways, this was sort of a make-up Tony for the Hair snub, especially since they had just rewarded Sondheim 12 months prior (although it is interesting that it was Sondheim, not MacDermot, who won score). But also, yes, Follies is one of those shows that has become much more respected as it has aged than it was when it first opened and audiences were much more divided.
30 years ago tonight marked the opening of the original Broadway production of Boublil & Schönberg's Miss Saigon. Today, we'll be looking back at this very show (through a feature I previously wrote back in 2019) as well as its success at the Tonys.
55 years ago tonight marked the opening of a new Broadway musical by Jerome Lawrence, Robert E. Lee, and Jerry Herman. Today, we'll be looking back at this very show as well as its success at the Tonys.
Today, we'll be taking a look back at what appeared to have been quite a stellar Best Lead Actress in a Musical lineup from the 2000 Tony Awards as well as a deep dive into all 5 nominees that year.
Jeffrey Karasarides said: "While there are some years where the runner-up seems more obvious than others, something I am planning to do at some point is a bonus series where I talk about a musical that might've been in third place, but people argued could've been in second. There, I'd be taking a deep dive into shows like The Great Comet, Something Rotten!, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and The Secret Garden."
Now, that new series has launched. For the 2019 edition of 'And the Tony Almost Went to...', I settled on Tootsie as the runner-up to Hadestown. Though today, we're going to look into whether or not it could've actually been The Prom.
Speaking of the 2019 Tonys, ''Beetlejuice'' got screwed. Yes, it received 8 nominations. but it should've got two more: Leslie Kritzer for Featured Actress and Alex Timbers for Best Director. And if I were a Tony voter, I would've marked my ballot for Alex Brightman for Best Actor. But the biggest crime was committed against its Tony-nominated scenic designer, David Korins. He created a spectacular funhouse worthy of Tim Burton, where crazy antics and a giant worm could thrive. Korins won the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for his set, and should've won the Tony, too. 'I love ''Hadestown,'' but its scenic design wasn't as singular and eye-popping as ''Beetlejuice.''
Here's a video of Korins showing off how detailed and dynamic the set was ...
Today, we'll be taking a look back at what ended up being a very competitive Best Lead Actor in a Musical race from the 2012 Tony Awards as well as a deep dive into all 5 nominees that year.
For the record, I thought Jeremy Jordan should've won the 2012 Best Actor in a Musical for the one-two punch of ''Bonnie & Clyde'' and ''Newsies.'' Bravo!
On this day in 1972, the original production of Pippin opened at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway. Today, we'll be looking back at this very show (through a feature I previously wrote in 2019) as well as its success at the Tony Awards.
On this day in 1987, the original production of Into the Woods opened at the Martin Beck (now Al Hirschfeld) Theatre on Broadway. Today, we'll be looking back at this very show (through a feature I previously published on Sondheim's 90th Birthday in 2020) as well as its success at the Tony Awards.
