I follow several actors on Instagram and one of the ensemble members (Becca Lee) posted that they are bringing in the original opening number as of tonight. Woah. I mean this show has been running for months and has been nominated for 7 Tony Awards. Aren't we locked by now? Bizarre!
I mean, it’s not TOTALLY unprecedented to make changes after a show is frozen (Lion King is a major example), but to do so between Tony nominations and the Tonys is really bizarre.
Seems like another publicity stunt.
Does anyone know what this opening number involves?
I know David Gordon from TheaterMania is making a guest appearance as one of the reporters in the opening night scene, but that's the only change I've heard

Wait, I just saw the post in question and apparently the new opening number has something to do with Forrest Gump? Was that the original musical Barry and Dee Dee were in before the FDR one?
On her Instagram Story, she mentions a special performance before tonight's show, which is what I'm assuming this is. Not a change, just something extra.
Okay let's clarify things. Becca Lee's post says "Today we are going back in time and performing what USED to be the Opening Number of The Prom." She says nothing about "bringing in the original opening number as of tonight."
Many cast members of The Prom (including Becca Lee herself) have been posting about a special press event today, so my assumption is that they are performing the original opening number at this press event, possibly to show how the show has developed over the years.
Let's not make things up or jump to crazy conclusions without doing some research first :)
It's probably for a special event related to the Broadway League Road Conference, which is happening all this week and is a big time for Tony campaigning. (And if Michael Riedel wants to be useful in his column on Friday, he'll provide a rundown of what different shows did to campaign to road voters!)
But yes, some members of the Broadway media (including Richie Ridge and David Gordon) are going to be playing themselves onstage this week during the opening interview scene. Again, probably related to the Road Conference, since a lot of voters will attend this week.

Woah, sorry! Very easy to jump to conclusions though. I'm sure I'm not alone haha. It totally threw me. I was like sad because we have that cast album memorized heehee
