Book Of Mormon or Tina?

I think Book Of Mormon is a recording. (I haven't seen the show, but I saw the website for a venue that hosted the touring version & it said something about a taped sound gunshot effect. Plus, I've seen a bootleg of the show & let's just say there is a unique effect created with the gun that I assume couldn't be pulled off with a real, working gun.)

Not to sound like a broken record, but does anyone know the situation with Tina.

I saw the first preview of Tina, so it might have changed since then, but there are 2 instances where a gunshot sound effect is used.

In the first act, Tina is singing (I forget which song), and Ike is in the background with several girls on a round bed. At one point near the end of the number, a girl runs out with a gun to her head. They get her to point the gun down and she "fires" into the floor.

At the top of the second act, Tina sings 'Private Dancer'. There's a gunshot sound effect at the end of the song when it's just Tina and Ike left on stage. Ike is in the shadows, though, but you'll know it's him. If I remember correctly, you see a car's headlightsand hear a tire screeching sound effect that happens just before the gunshot or at the same time.

Did the effects sound like actual blanks being fired or sound effects from the sound board?

Also, I had heard that in the London version there is a very brief scene where Ike fires a gun at Tina from a window. Are you suggesting that that scene/moment has been removed from the show?"

Both are sound effects from the soundboard. And I guess you could say the "Private Dancer" gunshot is through a window, but the set is so sparse that I don't distinctly remember what it looked like."

As always, a super sincere thank you to you for answering the questions & to those who started (and continue) this thread. This information is invaluable to someone like me. If only it existed years ago!

As someone who also loathes live gunfire in theatre, I'm very happy for this thread seeing as so many people seem to get bent out of shape when anyone asks to be warned about gunfire/overly loud noises in the theatre.  I don't understand why live gunfire is still used, but it is what it is.

Hamilton rocked my socks with the omission of any live gunfire.  

What was the final verdict of Tina?  Live gunshots or pre-recorded?

Oh since nobody has mentioned the current Little Shop production off-B'way, I think it should noted they use blanks for the gunshots near the end. Maybe it's because I had not seen a professional production of it before, but I assumed they would use recording. A wonderful production, but anyone who needs to know that, be wary.

Are you sure that they're blanks? To my knowledge, most productions use snare drum cracks for the gun sound. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I would have thought so too, but they clearly were. There was even some smoke and sparks that came out, so I am pretty certain they were blanks.

Edit: Anyone else see the show yet to confirm this or correct if those were blanks?

Now, I take it you're talking about the scene at the very end, where Seymour finally figures out the plant's motives & tries to kill it, before jumping in himself? 

Thus, I take it that there are a few, pretty loud and startling shots, in succession?

Re:I'm not familiar with gunhots FX forgive my description. In LSOH they sounded and looked like blanks. Seymour pulls the gun and shoots 3-4 times in slow succession along with beat of the music in Bigger Than Hula Hoops "Take that, and that, and that and that..."  There was visible smoke and sparks from the gun and you could see Seymour's hand react to power of shots kinda like how someone who's never shot off a gun would hold/react. Shots definitely did not sound like a snare. It was unexpected and startling. Only other production I've seen, Seymour used the machete to try and kill Audrey II.

Thanks for the information. While I am much more anxious about going to the show now, I am glad to know. 

I would have NEVER seen this one coming.

Does anyone know about gunfire in The Girl From North Country?  I think I read somewhere it does contain gunfire.  Any more details?

I've seen LSOH off bway twice and both productions did not have any gunfire. Just a gun that Seymore brings to the dentist and one other scene, but no shots fired.
So this is good info in case I see the current production.

Updating from the last time I posted this! Thanks again to everyone who reports, it's such a relief to not sit in fear for an entire show. Case in point, last night at Fefu, sitting in the front row -_- I'll give the details on that one below.

There are two gun shots, and they are very loud and jarring, but the intent is broadcast before the blast. The first is near the top of the show - Fefu moves stage left and opens the doors to the garden. She picks up the rifle next to her and lets off one shot. The second is at the very end of the show. Fefu will again pick up the rifle, and exit to the garden. The gun goes off a few moments later.

For Girl from the North Country a cast member told me that towards the end of the show there is a fight on stage, a character comes out and points a gun towards the ceiling and fires one shot.  It's done with blanks and isn't through the sound board.  Very loud and jarring.

Does anyone have more concrete information about the gunshots in Tina?  How many?  When?  Live or sound effects?

Not sure if Jersey Boys has been mentioned yet however, I will post when the shot occurs below. The show states that there are multiple gunshots but in the production I saw, there was only one. There was however, a loud bang at the very end of act 1 (I believe it is a camera sound effect)

The gunshot in Jersey Boys occurs about five songs in, after the song Angel eyes. It takes place when the characters are riding in the car, the character in the front seat pulls out a gun and "shoots" the driver.

I know this is super late, but can anyone remember back to Summer: The Donna Summer Musical if there are any gunshots during the show. I vaguely remember someone mentioning a gun is pulled out (during “Enough is Enough”?), but is there a fun actually fired during the show? We’re seeing the touring production soon.

There are no gunshots in Cats, play or movie. I have seen it 6 times on stage, and the movie.

No shots are fired, just a gun pulled out in the scene you mentioned above.

That is correct. However, I believe the recent revival had some pyro blasts/sparks during the Mr. Mistoffelees number. I’ve only seen it on YouTube videos, but it seemed like lesser, “pop” type of pyro blasts. Also, I recall in the original production, when Macavity cuts the power in his number, the electricity effect was a bit startling (while not containing guns or pyro)

I realize that, in a way, I have taken over this thread, and I do apologize for that.

However, I just wanted to “pop in” having JUST seen Little Shop. 

Simply, if you like the show...GO! The gunshots were not bad at all. They seemed more akin to a fancy cap gun than the type of loud guns/blanks we’ve seen in shows like Phantom or Les Miz.

If you go in knowing when it happens, and listening to “Da-Doo (Reprise)” on the new recording will tell you just that, and maybe even throw in some earplugs for extra assurance, you should be fine! The show’s a blast & from one loud noise sufferer to another, don’t let the few shots keep you from going!

James Cromwell's character is moving out of the house, says goodbye to his family, and exits through an entrance to the garage. You can hear the UHaul trucks start up, and then the front of the truck bursts through the kitchen wall. It was hilarious and very unexpected.
