Alexis Smith over Dorothy Collins in FOLLIES.  The voters must have been color-blind.  All they could see was the red.

Easy: "Sweeney Todd" over "Ballroom" in 1979.  No one expected Todd to win as 'Ballroom' was expected to take the jackpot.  And 'Ballroom' has lived on where as 'Sweeney Todd'....anybody?

Funny.  (I've a friend whose license plate reads SWEENEY.)

Agreed. I understand and respect the arguments of trans people and supporters of trans rights who are uncomfortable with Tootsie (and the forthcoming Mrs Doubtfire musical for that matter), and I think we do need a nuanced discussion about how to handle “Here’s a man in a dress. Isn’t it hilarious?” comedy is 2019. However, personally attacking Fontana is really vindictive and mean spirited, and does little to advance the debate in any meaningful way (As far as I can tell, Fontana’s Interview with Deadline is the only time anyone in the Tootsie team has acknowledged the trans issue). Fontana is an excellent singer, seems like a decent person and certainly put a lot of effort into his performance. Even if you prefer other nominees like Damon Duano or Alex Brightman, it is possible to at least respect Fontana’s performance rather than treating him with the venom he has received from some detractors.

Tootsie’s Best Book win seems more problematic to me, even though some of the lines mentioned in the reviews are hilarious (and probably funnier than the famous “How do you feel about Cleveland?” Line from the original). The criticisms people have of this production tend to stem from the concept and the way the script handles it...
