I was very happy to see Lady Gaga go home empty handed. Not only was her performance wildly overrated. She STILL refuses to speak out against R. Kelly.

The less we see of her the better.

Gaga won a Golden Globe last night, she didnt go home empty handed. And shes not going away any time soon.

She cancelled the music video that was SHOT with R. Kelly and it was never released. She has spoken about her own sexual assault and the trauma that followed. She even sang an Oscar nominated song for the The Hunting Ground, a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses.

What do you want her to do?

The last comment she made about R. Kelly was " "R Kelly and I have sometimes (had) very untrue things written about us so, in a way, this was a bond between us."

She has refused to say anything negative about him or participate in Surviving R. Kelly.

You can't defend a sexual predator of children and still fancy yourself an advocate.

Yeah it's five years old because that's the last thing she said about it.

The last time Lady Gaga decided to talk about R. Kelly she DEFENDED HIM.

Also the reason given for cancelling that video is that her team decided it was too "sexually explicit". Not because he is a child rapist. She still chose to perform the song with him on SNL.

One of the biggest failings of the court of public opinion is its lack of sentencing guidelines.

Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle Declined to Speak for ‘Surviving R. Kelly,’ Producer Says

“Most people just don’t want to touch it,” Hampton said. “[Questlove] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.”

Actually I was wrong! The real story is even worse.

To this date, the only reason Lady Gaga has given for canceling the video that was basically a commercial for rape is "time constraints and management problems."

She has NEVER spoken out against R. Kelly. Only defended him.

Ah, so you were just making things up. I thought so.

You realize Gaga didn't rape anyone, right? Do you expect Macaulay Culkin to apologize for working with Donald Trump in Home Alone 2?

Give it up, Kwang.

LOL. Correcting myself isn't making things up. And the truth is WORSE than what I said originally.

I guess you're cool with people defeding child rapists.

Saw Vice the other night. Bale was terrific, deserved his GG, but the film was crap. If it's a comedy, it was the most unfunny one I've seen in a long time. Completely lacked the erudite depth it should have had. So who were the producers... ahh... I see Brad Pitt and Will Ferrell in there, 'nuff said.

Saw Bohemian Rhapsody in one of two sold-out theaters at the multiplex. A valentine to Freddy and Queen. Rami was terrific if you could get past his painful prosthetic overbite. For the first time, in I don't know how long, the audience wildly applauded at the end. Say what you want, but it had that certain something.

BlacKkKlansman was sadly overlooked. It's an excellent film.

I'm also a huge fan of the Starz TV show Counterpart. J.K. Simmons is wonderful, playing two roles. It deserves nominations for series and acting at the very least. Am I the only one watching this fine work?

*Interesting that while many think that the Golden Globes are not good indicators of potential Oscar wins, here is a list of Best Picture winners over the years ( with the Globes categorizing the win as either for Drama or Comedy/Musical) which proves it otherwise.

Jo, You are absolutely correct.  They have also been good indicators in the actor, actress and director categories.  I'm not saying that for the last 10 years, they have always been correct, but to my knowledge they have never gotten all 4 categories incorrect.  If they did it is a rarity.  So back to my point.  If Golden Globes were not awarded to A Star Is Born in the best film, actor, actress, and director categories, I doubt, if all four are winning Oscars as many on here had predicted.  Also thanks to AADA81 for explaining the Golden Globes to me.  I really had no idea.  Even though I have attended not one, but two dress rehearsal ceremonies during the TBS days.smiley

This is actually such an easy question to answer I'm surprised anyone would ask it.

Lady Gaga should follow the example of others who have spoken out.

Take Tank for example, a supporter of R Kelly until recently who said:

"“We’ve invested so much of ourselves into this man that it’s hard for us to let go. I no longer have that issue,” Tank, who has been publicly supportive of R. Kelly up until now, wrote on Instagram as well. “I whole heartedly apologize for not coming to this realization sooner. I CANOT [sic] separate the music from the monster! My 3 black daughters won’t let me. What hurts even more are the facilitators around him. His team, his record company, the promoters, the radio stations! There has to be a line drawn.”

I don't see why Gaga should have to apologize for anything. She didn't abuse anyone. I hate this trend of finding the nearest woman associated with a toxic man and raking them over the coals. The same thing happened to Meryl Streep with Weinstein. No one else should be held responsible for the actions of an abuser.

Umm no. It's not just women. It's Jay-Z, Questlove and many others.

Has anyone ever thought that Lady Gaga hasn’t waded into the R Kelly situation because it’s extremely triggering for her and could effect the PTSD she already suffers from due to her own past? She hasn’t even named her abuser publicly. Perhaps her distancing herself from the song, recording a new duet, and not releasing the video was her way of trying to move on after she learned the truth? I am sure she suffers extreme guilt seeing as how she was speaking out about Me Too long before Me Too had fully formed into what it now is. Perhaps she will eventually release a statement when she feels strong enough, but I can’t dare believe that she hasn’t because she believes or supports him.

"I was very happy to see Lady Gaga go home empty handed"

It's NOT her responsibility, or any celebrity to speak out about a child molester. It's not their job. The victims have come forward, and some are still inside the statue of limitations for sexual conduct/offenses towards a child, kidnapping, etc. They have been strong and brave enough to finally tell their story, I hope they feel comfortable filing police reports against that vile garbage person.  He deserves to be in prison for the rest of his life.

That Gaga or any other artists decided to collaborate with R. Kelly in the last 10+ years since that rape tape with him and a 14 year minor surfaced is beyond me.

And no, it's technically not her responsibility to speak out against a child molester, but in light of the fact that (a) she collaborated with said child molester and (b) is a victim of sexual abuse herself and (c) a very influential figure it would be great if she did if only to show support for the women who were abused by him.

It's a shame she and many of the other celebrities that worked with him have refused to do so because they are basically ashamed of having worked with him to begin with and some won't because they may or may not be guilty of the same kind of behavior and misogyny.

"It's NOT her responsibility, or any celebrity to speak out about a child molester. It's not their job."

It's this type of thinking, especially by people in power (like Lady Gaga, Jay Z, etc) that allow these things to go on for so long.

R. Kelly was a known abuser, especially by people in the industry, when these celebrities CHOSE to work with him.

"The victims have come forward, and some are still inside the statue of limitations for sexual conduct/offenses towards a child, kidnapping, etc. They have been strong and brave enough to finally tell their story, I hope they feel comfortable filing police reports against that vile garbage person.  He deserves to be in prison for the rest of his life. I suggest you research the allegations against Kelly and watch the documentary. Women have been coming forward about Kelly for years.

Nope.  Like most of us women, we've been sexually harassed or assaulted multiple times in life.  Some people have triggers, and you should probably RESPECT that, not judge people to do what they are not comfortable doing. If you aren't a women, you will never fully understand. Ever.

Yeah no, I've read reports for years. I won't be watching a "documentary" on Lifetime (a joke) but women have come forward for years and were not believed by law enforcement.  He went to trial one time and was acquitted on all those charges for some reason.  Finally, a group of women have come forward.  Again, I hope he can be arrested for some of these acts.

Didn't she work with him just after he was found NOT guilty?

It wasn't until 2 or 3 years after she worked with him that the cult sex prisoner stuff came out.

I imagine it was their shared record company that organised the duet to give him some cred back and she had little to do with any decision making.

Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist and a total lunatic and yet Madonna had him all over her last album and in her tour videos.

Hi all, first, we want to thank you for keeping this discussion civil, despite it being pretty spirited. However, this thread is supposed to be about "A Star is Born," and it not winning at last night's Golden Globes. While the conversation of Lady Gaga (and other artists) and R. Kelly did arise organically, it's probably better to steer the discussion back to the film and the awards.

If you would like to continue this discussion in one form or another, it is probably most fitting on the Off-Topic board, as it doesn't even have the musical film connection to Broadway that "A Star is Born."

However, I do want to reiterate how appreciative we are with how lively, yet respectful, this conversation has been.

Funny for you to say that as you discount the word of countless women of color who have spoken out against Kelly.

And if you don't believe Lifetime several other new organziatios have done very detailed articles on Kelly in the past. Or you can probably still see the video for yourself. And there's no dispute that he married Alyiah when SHE WAS 15.

**edited to add the Mod is right. My apologies for taking this thread way OT.
